Different formats of a video

A question, in PLEX how do I upload different versions of a video? That is to say, I want to upload it in 4k, 1080p and 720, because if I only upload to 4k when a device is not 4k or the Internet does not support that quality, the quality is lowered and it causes the Plex server to transcode the video and not do direct transmission, I saw that in emby you could select which video formats to choose, but in PLEX I saw that it does detect the 2 versions of the video that I uploaded, but when playing and putting the different qualities of the video that I uploaded it only transcodes dem video in 4k at the selected quality, I have tried it on different devices and it does not do direct transmission, it only does transcode, except if I put its original 4k quality

I don’t know your system and use cases, but if the only reason you are avoiding transcoding is because “the internet” said to do so … It might be bad advice. I mention this just because this advice was ubiquitous and lasted, IMHO, much longer than was necessary.

My own goal for Plex is to have one file that can play on any device without any extra effort required, and it delivers that for me. YMMV.

I agree with your advice if all intentions are to keep it simple but as Audio Visual appliances have evolved with the abilities of some fantastic codecs, I am not convinced it’s for everyone. To name a few, spatial audio, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.

Then we have Compression with H.265 and on the horizon H.266, wait on the almost standard of resolution today is 4K with 8K already out in wild. It’s mind boggling to remember where it all started on Television broadcasts with 160 and 320i

Multi version ability will help navigate the ever increasing pace of Audio Visual Technology releases along with there advantages for the ever increasing device types available. WiFi and currently 5G has opened a whole new world of Video consumption.

But we’re talking about reducing quality as needed. You can have an H.266 Atmos Quantum HDR 16k file but why bother to manually create a 2Mbps 720p SDR stereo version for viewing over cellular data when Plex can do that automatically?

Ok, you win. It not worth discussing why it would be needed.
