Direct connection to server is unavailable causing poor streaming on wifi devices on the same network

Hi Guys,

I’m really frustrated with Plex at the moment I’ve been using it for year’s and love the program but can’t seem to solve this issue, Basically I tried to play a 1080p film on my Roku smart TV and noticed the quality was terrible, I went into the settings and saw that it had “limited Quality” and a message saying a direct connection to the server was unavailable, I’ve tried everything to resolve this but can’t get anywhere, I’ve also noticed that remote access drops out quickly after it connects.

I’m using a Sky Q Router (UK) with a wired connection to a Windows 10 PC running PMS and use a WiFi connection for my Roku TV, I have also tried running files through my WiFi PS4 and my phone and I get the same problem.
I’ve set up a static IP and followed the guides available to enable port forwarding for port 32400 on my router and that didnt work I’ve also tried basic stuff like re-installing the apps/PMS I’ve removed any and all VPN programs from my computer I’ve tried with my antivirus on and off nothing seems to work I even tried a few older versions of PMS, I don’t know what changed to cause this issue but prior to this I was able to stream full 4K content.

Any ideas? as I have no idea what else to try

When playing a film on the TV, monitor playback in Plex Dashboard → Now Playing.

Is the connection local, remote, or indirect?

Check the network connection on your PC running PMS. Make sure it is Private, not Public.
Settings → Network & Internet to check. Click on Properties if you need to change it.

You may need to reboot the PC, or at least restart PMS, if you change the network setting.

If that does not help and the connection is Indirect, see this post for a list of items to check.

Well It turned out my network was p;ublic, I changed it to private and all seems to be back to normal I can’t believe it was that simple Thanks for your help hopefully it stays that way

Public isolates your computer from other devices on the network.

Great when you’re in a coffee shop. Not so great when you’re trying to stream at home.

Glad you have things working.

Cheers.
