'Direct Connection unavailable' and 'Can't reach Plex server securely' issue

This weekend I had to get a new router and after setup (including setting up port forwarding for 32400 to my PC), I’m getting error messages when trying to connect via my Android tablet app and the Xbox One app. It does work through the web browser on the PC in question.

Via my Android tablet’s app, I get the message that ‘Direct Connection unavailable’. For the Xbox One it says it can’t reach my server securely and prompts asking if would like to reach it through an insecure connection. Edit: this is a local network connection.

I’ve gone through as many of the troubleshooting articles that I can find which seem to mostly point back to port forwarding. I believe I’ve got that set up correctly on port 32400 because the other port forwarding I’ve set up is working (e.g. HTTP/VNC). IP address of the PC is 192.168.0.2.

I did find that when my PC connected to the network on the new router for the first time, it was set up as Public Network. I have since changed that to a Home Network.

The last article I walked through was this one. https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/206721658 In it, I checked the XML and it has the correct IP address. Per those instructions I uninstall the Media Server and reinstalled. The same problem is occurring. I tried to attaching the log file, but clicking on the icon to attach a file does nothing for me.

Details that may be helpful
The router is an Actiontec GT784WN.
Plex Media Server version: 1.3.3.3148
PC OS: Windows 7

Thanks for any help.

Rob

Hi Rob,

Seems like its caused by port forwarding issues since thats the last thing you changed, unless something since went wrong after reinstallation.

Some details I couldn’t work out from your post, when accessing from your tablet app to your server are you local or remote relating to your server?

Are you able to browse either http://127.0.0.1:32400/web locally on the server or http://server.local.ip:32400/web within your local network, from your tablet?

And then I assume once outside the network you cannot reach http://server.external.ip:32400/web you cannot access this? Once port forwarding is correct this should be accessible (assuming you’re not restricting to secure connections only).

Have you checked what is showing in the server settings (https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200484543-Enabling-Remote-Access-for-a-Server)?

Thanks for the reply. Sorry I wasn’t clear, but this is all on a local network. I’m not trying to get to it remotely yet.

On the server, I can get to it via http://127.0.0.1:32400/web. On my tablet, I cannot get to it via http://192.168.0.2:32400/web. I get a ‘site can’t be reached message’.

Per the Enabling Remote Access, I’ve flipped back and forth on Enabling/Disabling. At times, it flashes up that it’s accessible from outside my network, but then quickly changes to ‘Not available outside your network’. I’ve even tried manually setting the public port to 32400 with no luck. At this point, I’d like to get it working locally first if at all possible.

This certainly feels like a port problem, but currently at a loss.

After working perfectly for like two years, this is suddenly happening to me since yesterday. Can’t get a reliable remote connection going for very long, though restarting the router helps for a little while…
Anyone else?

If you cannot reach the server web page on the local network the issue is certainly with your server settings for remote/web access or possibly even windows firewall, not port forwarding or your router.

@ister sounds like a different issue (as in working but intermittently), I suggest you start your own support request or thread.

Guys…I don’t know what to say. I had rebooted everything multiple times to no avail, but I’m guessing I never rebooted my modem/router. Once I did that, the connections are working fine via the local network. I’ll worry about remote access later. I appreciate your input and help.

I might have fixed this now by turning off DDoS protection on my ASUS router…
