Direct Play and Sharing

I was wondering would it be easier on my older computer that houses my plex files to direct play instead of transcoding? Also before I had tried to share some video through plex with a family member. It seemed to really slow my internet speed. Would direct play have any bearing to change that? I am using only the 4k firestick on all TVs

Thanks

Yes!

Direct play is always easier on your computer than transcoding!

Thank You

Direct play is always the goal but internet speed is a barrier that may be an insurmountable obstacle

You can try to keep lower bandwidth copies or optimize some of your media for streaming to help

if you have a very slow upload speed and they have a low download speed, there might be nothing you can do.

You should also double check to make sure your remote access is working properly. If it’s not, you can get what’s called a relay connection which slows down everything to 2 Mbps

You can view this in the server settings dashboard when something is playing

In each client (on the Firestick) there are also bandwidth limits that should be changed. The default is usually too low at 2 to 4 Mbps 720p

This can cause a lot of unnecessary transcoding

Thanks

is there a way I can tell if something is direct playing?

Server settings → Dashboard → Show details

It will say local, indirect, or remote where the yellow box is
Direct Play or Transcode where the arrow is
