I would like to suggest direct play AV1 support on apple TV and IOS devices. The storage benefits are pretty impressive for a bunch of movies and videos I’ve tried out with no visual loss (at least to me). Right now plex will transcode, which is a good stop gap (when the hw transcoding doesn’t incorrectly jump in), but direct play would obviously be preferable as the server doesn’t get slammed with transcode requests for AV1 which currently runs pretty slow.
I am pretty sure the mpv player already supports AV1 so hopefully this is mostly just an uplevel? At some point in the future apple should support this natively at which point HW support should work just by using their built-in player.
There’s already a more generic suggestion discussing an option to support AV1 playback on devices which support this. I suggest you comment/vote in that thread in order to help us avoid distracting or cannibalizing votes.
Unless I’m missing some unique aspect of your suggestion I’ll close this thread as a duplicate.
