So whats the deal with the plex app for apple tv not being able to support AV1 but when I use the infuse player app it does direct play just fine without needing to convert to h264. Is this being worked on at all?
My first generation Apple TV 4K is able to direct play AV1 content.
What version of the Plex app are you using on your ATV?

Don’t get your hopes too high, there is no HW decode on the 5year old cpu tech in the latest AppleTV. Apple been letting the hw age and rot. But it can brute force it with probably some heat and eventual throttling.
You can add a server level profile override to allow direct play of AV1. I have a first gen and third gen ATV 4k. In both cases it plays back 1080p content with no dropped frames but 4k content is too much for even the third gen and it starts dropping frames. This is a limitation of the ATV itself and so I am hoping that Plex will fix the transcoding issue I have identified about (see my post). The ideal scenario for these devices is to allow Plex to transcode any AV1 files to HEVC with HDR colour. But at the moment the ATV plex app overrides any transcode settings and incorrectly requests a faulty stream which will not play back (mkv inside an HLS stream instead of mpegts)
