Direct Play.. No transcode.. How to..?

LOL
My Bad!!
I missed where he said he was using subtitles.
That, of course, will cause transcoding in many cases.

So I can use handbrake… which will allow me to choose the above requested options?

Also… I don’t need subtitles… Didn’t even know they were there

Your in good hands with @ChuckPA .
Sounds like he has a handle on your issue and he says he will advise you…

@preynolds2

Would you like to keep the quality you have or doesn’t it matter?

The tool to get is mkvtoolnix. It allows you to remove those streams (subtitles and/or audio) you don’t want without impacting the others.

Mkvtoolnix is available on Windows and Mac in gui by default. On Linux, it’s available as mkvtoolnix with the companion mkvtoolnix-gui (GUI)

Would like to keep the 4k

Maybe I will have to upgrade to a new cpu

I will try both handbrake and mkvtool.

Does handbrake allow me to keep the 4k resolution or do I have to downgrade to 1080 ?

In handbrake…
Output settings I changed to MP4
Video Tab --> I changed video Codec to H.265(x265)
Audio Tab --> I set codec to AC3
Subtitles Tab --> I hit the ‘Clear’ button
Picture Tab --> it defaults to 1920 x 1080. But wont let me change anything there.

I dont see anything in reguards to HVEC.

On the right hand side “Presets”
What do I choose there?

thanks for all the help!

Handbrake will take up to 2 days to process a long movie and you will lose quality. That is how handbrake works.

Mkvtoolnix does the work in minutes, not hours, with no loss of quality.

Start with it and then use handbrake only if needed.

Yes, you need a CPU with QSV capability if you want to stay in 4K HDR

I assume my i7 does not have this QSV… ?

or… maybe it does. i7-4770k @3.5GHz

i9 are awful expensive still.

i7 does have QSV

I7-77xx (kabylake) is what you need for HEVC decode

do not bother with the i9

How do I know that QSV is enabled?

Upgrading to i7-77xx will most likely get rid of many of my problems?

Yes, upgrading to any Intel processor with Quick Sync Video (QSV) in the spec helps a lot.
Seeing “HD Graphics 600” (or higher… e.g. 630) is what is needed for HEVC

You’ll know PMS sees the processor’s CPU in Settings - Server - Transcoder : Use hardware acceleration when available will appear.
If it doesn’t, I’m the guy to talk to

IMHO buying a machine just to transcode 4K seems too expensive for what you get and kinda rediculous.

If you encode all your 4K to direct play AND only allow access to LOCAL devices that support 4K
and
For all other users create 1080p versions and allow access to those for non-4K devices.

You will be able to get 4K working properly for NO additional hardware costs…

That is unless you got tons of money to throw at the hardware…

It’s not about transcoding only the 4K, it’s about being able to convert the audio (Direct Stream). The CPU must be strong enough to handle pulling the container apart into its constituent streams, converting the audio, and recontainerizing.

@jjrjr1

Did you not acknowledge that I got this?

This is about what he wants and he seems to have stated pretty clearly what he wants.

What may be too expensive to you may not be to someone else.

Please stop pushing your solution?

Ok Bro…
There is only one solution… And I know it is not mine…
lol
Guess I’ve been told! (ShutUp)
What a trip!!!

Then please stop spamming the thread?

Spamming???
Been trying to share what I know and recommend an alternative.
Bye again…
Been fun.
