Direct Play.. No transcode.. How to..?

My computer (i7 3.5) will not stream 4k (hard wired) without stuttering.

This is because of transcoding??

Will it help if I just stream directly?
Did I need to manually convert the file somehow?

I’ve tried putting it on the plex cloud.
4k version won’t even load up without getting a “took too long to load” error.
I have a gigabit connection.

Thanks for any help.

In order to direct play 4K it should be encoded like so.
Container = mp4
Video Codec = h265
Audio Codec = AC3 for both 2 or multi channel.

Also to ensure direct play of other formats… substitute h264 for h265.

Like that you media should direct play if you keep bit rates below 12mbps, Ethernet connected (No wifi).

Can you give me directions on how to encode like this?

Before you go too deep there,

Can you grab the log files? It’s a good idea to see what PMS thinks of the file(s). It might be a simple issue of your network is too slow.

Sure… where and which log file?

settings - server - help - download logs.

Please attach the ZIP file it gives you.

Here ya go…

Tell me if you need me to try to play the 4k video right before I download logs.

PMS thinks it has to transcode and the server isn’t strong enough to transcode it at real-time speed.

speed=x.x tells us the realtime factor. 2.0 means it’s transcoding 2x faster than real-time need.

You’re getting less than 1.0. This is verification it’s the CPU/video and nothing else.

For the movie: Apollo 13, it sees it as 4K (3840) but your TV/player is only 2K (1920)
It also shows subtitles are embedded in the file and need to be burned in (transcoded) because the player can’t handle that format. (usually only SRT, SSA, ASS can be direct played. Anything else requires the transcoder to merge them into the main video image.

I would next like you to hover over the movie you played with your mouse. Click the ellipsis (...) then click “Get info”.
When this displays, you’ll see “View XML”. Please click that.

A new tab will open showing the tech info of the video.

Please copy/paste it here (using “Code” paragraph formatting in the Paragraph formatter ^^^) or screenshot it.

I suspect it’s HEVC (H.265) and trying to work with it but that Xeon can’t get it done. This is where seeing the XML is what’s needed next.

Nice information. Thanks!

I’m confused as to why it shows my tv as 1920. The tv I’m using the plex app with is certainly 2160.

check the app settings. the app is reporting 1920x 1080p.

LOL
Isn’t that what I said???
Transcode HVEC as
Container = mp4
Video = h265
Audio = AC3

LOL
HVEC at almost 48mbps will ALWAYS transcode no matter what you do.
What device are you streaming to at that speed and, of course, remote stream at that BW will be problematic at least.

I suggest you keep your bitrate around 12-15 mbps for your 4K media…

Isn’t that what I said???
Transcode HVEC as
Container = mp4
Video = h265
Audio = AC3

Maybe ??

Still… I dont know where to change these options, or, what to even use.
This is in Plex settings? Or a separate program I need to use?

I dont know what HVEC is… or how it’s at 48mbps.

I am streaming from my computer to my Vizio TV (not remote… hard wired)

HEVC is High Efficiency Video Codec aka. h.265
The xml you posted shows its at 48mbps.
The xml also says this is in an mkv container with 8 channel dc-ma encoding…

You fix all those things… it will probably Direct Play to your 4K devices.

BTW: be sure your client quality setting is set to “Original Quality”. On some Plex clients I think even that setting tops at 20mbps…

Can you please explain How to fix these problems specifically?

Sure
The files need to be re-encoded in the formats I suggested.
There are Many tools available to do this.

Most folks here use Handbrake.

Search around and you will find lots of tools that can do this for you.

@jjrjr1

Thanks for your help but I’ve got this. You were the advocate of H.265 which is indeed the issue, with subtitles, to be resolved.

@preynolds2

What are you playing on? (What’s the player?) This will be one facet of the decision.
The other facet are all the PGS (bitmapped) subtitles in the file. If you don’t need subtitles, they can be removed without using handbrake and reducing the quality.
