Direct Play?

Does RasPlex support direct play or does it transcode everything like a Roku box etc?

it can do direct play as original plex

Sweet! So it works in essence like the OS X client and will be OK over wireless (using a Mac Mini over wireless currently).

ALL Plex clients direct play the codecs they support, and transcode the ones they don't.  RPi is no different, it will direct play the codecs the device supports based on its out-of-the-box supported codecs and the additional codec licenses you choose to buy from RPi.

So what are the supported codecs specific to RasPlex? We have a number of Mac Mini's we've been using forever and I'm thinking of ditching them if RasPlex works.

You should be fine with everything apart from the following:

  • MPEG2 - you can buy a license for a couple of bucks to enable this though

  • VC1 - you can buy a license for a couple of bucks to enable this though

  • 1080P with DTS audio - the PI foundation are trying to sort out a hardware decoding license for this - hopefully Rasplex will sort out audio transcoding for this in the meantime (you can also use a receiver with DTS passthrough / 720p seems fine).

Great info. Where do I purchase the licenses from?

actually, the roku does direct play, like trudge said, all the plex clients do direct play, it's a matter of configurations, I personally have all my clients doing "force direct play" include the roku, that way I don't put too much work on my server,

Like most thin clients it will choke on uncompressed BluRay-rips though! Forcing it to transcode to say 12Mbps seems to work fine.

Also I am on a wired gigE network.

I take it you mean force it on the server side?  Does that choking include using the VC1/MPEG-2 addons?

1080p with DTS passthrugh works fine on my pi without transcoding, even uncompressed bluray remuxed to mkv.
