Rasplex / Android App and Transcoding

Hi all,

Hopefully a simple question for someone in the know, if I buy a RP 3 and hardwire it into my network then use the android app to select content and play on the Pi what will happen in terms of playback?
Will the Pi reach over the wired network and direct play content from the Plex server? or will it force the server to transcode content and send it to the Pi?

The reason I ask is my Samsung TV currently transcodes in this scenario, I did read into it and its not going to be fixed anytime soon / if at all so I wondered if a Pi might do the job?

Thanks for any help / input

Rasplex will direct play the content if you are using supported codecs, even if you use it on LAN or Wifi

Excellent!, thank you for the reply, very helpful indeed

you should also check what are the supported codecs for your Samsung TV, chances are that you just need to remux your content and Plex can do it for you

Note that the RPi store sells two types of codec license that are required for native playback support of some media.
Buying these will give you two license codes to be edited into the config.txt file of your SD card.

I believe these are required for direct play support of DivX media as well as the native mpeg-2 format used in DVD VOB files and thus also in unconverted DVD rips, such as those created by programs like MakeMKV.

Without such license codes installed, those media types will have to be transcoded by PMS for playback in RasPlex.
I should add that these license codes are individual per RPi unit, adapted to the unit’s serial number that you have to send in when ordering the licenses. So if you use several RPi units, you’ll need separate licenses for each of them.
