Hi, i have plex installed on two phones with identical setting on both apps. One plays perfectly with direct play working, the other constantly buffers and when i look at playback info it tells me ‘Direct play was attempted but failed, fallen back to transcoding.’ Any ideas as to why this is happening?
You’ll need to share some more information on this use case…
Is this about streaming the same file; are you streaming local of remotely?
What mobile platforms are those phones and what versions of the Plex app do you have installed on them?
Hi thanks for the quick response. The plex server is set up on my pc, latest version 1.29.2.6364. Both phones are Android 12 both are on latest versions offered from play store. I’m streaming them locally on the same network, with all settings identical. I’ve also uninstalled and reinstalled the affect app to see if that would help, with no affect. What information is showing in the “now playing” tile for that playback on the Plex server dashboard? I’m primarily interested if it’s streaming local, remote or indirect as well as what is being transcoded.

The screenshots are of the same movie on each device
The phones are both Nokia one is the 8.3 5G which works perfectly the other is the X30 both phones are capable of H265 MP4 playback.
The client logs of the 2nd phone where direct-playing the HEVC media fails might show some details of what’s going wrong.
