Direct Streaming with ASS Subtitles with Special Styling requires Burn-in and breaks when rewinding near end of stream

Server Version#: 1.24.0.4930
Player Version#: 11(?)

This drives me nuts on the daily, it’s specifically to deal with subtitles and happens on all Android clients, both mobile and TV.

Looks like it has to do with Plex Burning these subtitles with special styling in. It doesnt seem to be an issue native to android since other players play these mkvs with special styling just fine. Even other apps that leverage ExoPlayer handle this with grace.

I have no idea how this isn’t a high priority fix…

I don’t understand what you are showing in that video. looks like you enable subtitles then scrub to to the end where credits are. Is it jumping to the end on it’s own?

I showed subtitles were enabled, jumped to the end, and then tried to rewind. The video then freezes while the player “thinks” it’s still being played. Apologies if the video is not clear.

I showed it without subtitles to display that the issue is specific to when these subtitles are enabled.

Edited Title to make more sense, that’s my fault.

Edit: I have also confirmed that updating to the beta version with the new ExoPlayer does not fix the issue.

Very similar to what I and others have reported for quite some time. Playback Hangs Near End of File After FF/RW/Pause - AndroidTV Client

I do know about that issue @boblinthewild this one just seems specific to subtitles. @Pwhelan81 does it happen as well when you try rewind when only half-way through?

@BigWheel I should have mentioned this caveat to start with. It happens (for me at least) only when the transcoding Buffer is filled to the end. There are examples of shows I’ve encountered where it fills up halfway through (10 minute episode) and the same behavior occurs. Hope this helps narrow it down. Not sure if anyone else can confirm.

Edit: Only occurs during “Direct Play” with subtitle burn-in. Does not occur when converting video with subtitle burn-in.

@BigWheel In that other thread I reported having narrowed the problem down to videos that were transcoding for ASS subtitles, so maybe there is some commonality here?

@BigWheel Are there any possible updates on this? This is happening with 100% reproducibility on Android BETA.

@BigWheel
Burn in is still required for ASS subtitles for all clients other than the Plex Client on Windows (and I assume other Desktop OS clients)… And the rewind at the end bug is still occurring. This is antithetical to what I expect from a paid service like this when other platforms (who also leverage ExoPlayer) have this figured out.

It is completely app-breaking.

Are there any updates to this? I would love to stay on Plex but I’m beginning to look elsewhere for anime/media with ASS subtitles…

@BigWheel

A bit more digging… Seems the rewind at the end bug is just specific to transcoding. Rewinding near the end of a transcoded video with no subs encounters the same thing. Although the bigger issue is ASS subs requiring a transcode.

It’s been radio silence since forever. Very frustrating.
