Burned-in .ass subtitles improperly formatted with latest versions of Plex

Server Version#: 1.32.1.6983
Player Version#: 4.104.2
Linux, Ubuntu 20.04.6 LTS

I’m not sure when this started, but it’s at least happening on the latest beta.

In situations where Plex needs to burn in .ass subtitles, it’s messing up the formatting and often times looks like a sentence is one giant word. Issue occurs with and without hardware acceleration enabled.

There’s a reddit thread talking about the same issue; I didn’t see a forum post so I figured I’d open one. "ASS" subtitles suddenly displaying poorly : PleX

This is what it looks like.
This is another example.

Is this going to be fixed? Or is it just ignored?

Looks like they chose to ignore it…

Not ignored.

While getting over the staffing changes, one of the first items being worked on are the various subtitle problems.

It’ll probably come out in dribs and drabs but not ignored (anymore).

One issue being worked on now is playback ending when the subtitles do or the subtitle stream was completely empty.
( i think that was a higher priority because it impacted every subtitle type)

To help me, may I get a sample video file with subs to use for recreation and testing?

I have a lot of problems with ASS subtitles on LG TV where the “burn” option is required. Subtitles very often appear for a fraction of a second and disappear or do not appear at all or appear for the last moment.

sample.zip (10.6 KB)

Attached an example but without video, use on any video and skip to 6:29

Dialogue: 0,0:06:30.61,0:06:32.09,NORMAL,0,0,0,Ohyda!
Dialogue: 0,0:06:32.09,0:06:32.79,NORMAL,0,0,0,Nie do pomyślenia!
Dialogue: 0,0:06:32.79,0:06:34.19,NORMAL,0,0,0,Niehigieniczne i obrzydliwe!
Dialogue: 0,0:06:34.19,0:06:35.59,NORMAL,0,0,0,Tak nie można, odpada, nigdy w życiu!

This appears for a moment:

Dialogue: 0,0:06:32.09,0:06:32.79,NORMAL,0,0,0,Nie do pomyślenia!

This doesn’t show up:

Dialogue: 0,0:06:32.79,0:06:34.19,NORMAL,0,0,0,Niehigieniczne i obrzydliwe!

Problem also occurs in web player with burn option: “always”

I think the problem gets worse when you get a higher density of subtitles or they change faster

Delays appear through the subtitles are at the bottom and top?
sample2.zip (2.4 MB)

ASS + Video in sample2

Same scene and in the plex the subtitles don’t display yet

Next one:

sample3.zip (66.5 KB)

In this case, at 14:00 pops up a logo that crash web player in “only image formats” option.

And in “always” mode everything below displays badly as I mentioned earlier:

Dialogue: 0,0:13:52.14,0:13:53.06,Main,Will,0,0,0,,Acceleratio!
Dialogue: 0,0:13:54.47,0:13:55.43,Main - Top,Will,0,0,0,,Currere!
