Will we be seeing directplay functionality in the app soon? as of now, everything is transcoded and I can notice some video quality degradation even at 20mbps setting.
and where can you adjust it exactly? In the PS3 / PS4 App or the PMS
On PS4 it's in the upper right corner on your profile.
this menu is empty on my ps3 and ps4. only the volume boost and subtitle can i change.
There are no directplay settings in my PS4 app, the only setting available is for adjusting transcoding bandwidth and since all videos buffer during playback, i’d guess all videos are being transcoded.
“The Plex for PlayStation app does not currently support Direct Playing of MKV container videos. If the audio and video streams in the file are otherwise compatible, it will be Direct Streamed.”
You didnt read the FAQ did you?
It says VERY CLEARLY...... the PS4 will only direct stream an MP4 container with AAC audio and H.264 video.
once again...
MP4 container
AAC audio
H.264 video
20Mbps or lower
Make the originating file that way... and it will direct stream.
My question is when will we have full directplay functionality.
Full meaning what?
Meaning any codec? Good luck.. never going to happen on a custom OS console. While I am not sure that the PS4/PS3 have the ability to play more than the current plex container/codecs... I have to believe that the Plex team would make the client as robust as possible when direct streaming when the majority of their support issues comes from transcoding questions/errors/bugs.
But to answer your question....
Technically you have full directplay functionality as long as your originating file meets the settings required.

It seems you're the one who didn't read very carefully. The faq clearly states:
Content matching the following can usually be Direct Played:
- Container: MP4
- Video Encoding: H.264
- Audio Encoding: AAC
- Bitrate: 20Mbps or lower
The same codecs in a different container (mkv etc) will be direct streamed so long they dont exceed the bitrate limitation.
Different codecs or to high bitrate will initiate transcoding.

Mkv container. h.264 video. DTS & DD audio. And a higher bitrate. Those are probably the most common formats and what Plex probably should aim for. Im not Sure Plex have any say in this though. I think its all up to Sony and what player they provide.

The bottom of the FAQ seems a bit contradicting and perhaps you are more in touch with it? It states that MKV containers are not currently supported for direct playing... but then in the following sentence it says that it will direct play as long as the contained codecs and bitrates are in the supported types.
It says mkv can't be direct played. Meaning the server will not transfer the file "as is" to the client. Mkv is only a container. A variety of codecs can reside in it. So long your video is h.264 with aac audio, the mkv will be direct streamed. What this means is that PMS will remux the mkv into an MP4, but otherwise leave the video and audio untouched. This is not very taxing on the server at all, nor does it degrade the quality of your file.
