what’s the state on Plex playing MKVs on the PS4? A few months ago, Sony released a new MediaPlayer with MKV support for the Playstation 4, does this mean the PlexApp can finally decode .mkv?
Sorry if this Question was asked recently, but I couldn’t find it even using google.
but the first tip of the FAQ-entry says “Plex is currently an early preview”. Because of this I thought this site is a little bit outdated. But if this FAQ is still a fact, your answer was quite helpfull
It should be up-to-date. If you want to confirm you can download the Plex for Playstation app (it is free for you as you are a PP subscriber) and try to play back a few mkv files. Then just double check in in the media manager if it is Direct Play or not.
The reason why I think it is correct is because Sony does not allow 3rd-party developers to use the same codec support as their own apps. Not yet at least. We can hope that they do that in the future though.
My problem is, that I don’t own a PS4. In fact, the capability of its PlexApp may determine which console i will buy (Xbox One or PS4). Playing MKVs with 1080p and allow DTS-Passthrough has to be possible, so I am not quite sure if should wait for the Apple TV instead…
I already own a Pi2, so maybe I’ll stick to this plan My server is rather weak, it’s a synology ds 413 with a crappy ppc-processor, so I am not quite sure if it can handle direct streaming…
The Pi2 is an amazing little guy. I think the future is bright for that one! It can direct play MKV files and srt subtitles. No other super-low-cost device can say that. Roku can, but that is another step up in price.
Im using the Samsung Smart Tv client 99% of the time so my experience with the PS4 as a client is limited, but I will say this about the PS4 client: The UI is great, Direct Streamed content looks amazing, and the HDMI CEC features works well, so that I can navigate Plex (and the PS4 menu) using my Samsung remote. If my Samsung TVs didn’t already have a good client, I would for sure have “settled” for the PS4 client. Had it supported direct play of mkv with h.264, ac3 & dts, it would have been my go to client for sure.
Plex should stop ■■■■■■■ around and reproduce this problem themselves. It´s not that hard. If you don´t have videos, then download some different examples to study.
I excuse my language, I just installed a new setup for this and quality of this is just useless at the moment. First it plays nicely and then all the sudden playing stops every 3 seconds to buffer more.
Wired local network, only computer and PS4.

Plex Inc. has tested this and put it on the site that I linked to in my first reply.

And booom! Suddenly MKV´s are not supporterd, why did it work before?
Suddenly? Where are you getting this information? If it was working before was because PMS transcoded (or remuxed) the MKV container to the MP4 container. Plex for PS4 has never Direct Played the MKV container as far as I know. And that is what is reflected in the link I posted above.

What ever, but it did work before. Now it´s choppy as hell.
Fair enough. That is however a totally different issue, and I recommend you start a different thread about it. This thread is about Direct Play support for MKV in the PS4 client. And that will not happen until Sony opens the floodgate.
I believe it might be MKV+DTS sound that is causing this choppy functionality. I will investigate using AC3 if the problem presists. Perhaps transcode audio only? Or built-in converter for noobs to make them videos right for different kind of devices?
