How is this not in yet? The simplest version cannot be hard to implement. Also I cannot get it to work if I have both 1080 and 4k versions, plex will always just play the 1080 version, which seems to be opposite for many people.

As others have stated, a good compromise i think would be to disable transcoding on a folder basis. That way, a plex server owner can disable transcoding for specific movies by putting them in that folder.
