100% support this. Make it happen PLEX
How is this not in yet? The simplest version cannot be hard to implement.
Also I cannot get it to work if I have both 1080 and 4k versions, plex will always just play the 1080 version, which seems to be opposite for many people.
As others have stated, a good compromise i think would be to disable transcoding on a folder basis. That way, a plex server owner can disable transcoding for specific movies by putting them in that folder.
I will like this to
This is a feature that is more needed now than ever. There should be the ability to pick which bitrate and/or quality you do not want to transcode.
Hi @elan
Could you make a statement if such a function is planned in the near future?
Honestly, I find it hard to believe that this is/would be a big deal.
It actually only needs the Disable Transcoding function on the category level to implement this cleanly.
Currently it is just not usable well. Either you disable all transcoding on the server (which is not possible because of many incompatible subtitles and all the phones/pads) or the 4K content kills the server at the latest at the 3rd stream.
Currently I had to set up a 2nd server because of 5 users where I only have the 4K content on it and have disabled the transcoding. Which costs a lot of money and electricity which would not really be necessary.
In addition, it is poorly usable because the users are now on 2 servers. Watch a movie in 4K it is not shown as seen in the normal movies etc. there are so many bad features in this solution, but currently this is not otherwise feasible, just because you can not say please transcode anything in this category.
Would be really really happy if you add something in this direction. It can’t possibly be much work to switch this function from the global level to the categories. You should only be able to set a hook in the category settings, no transcoding.
4K transcoding is not the problem. Subtitles burn in is the pain.
I’d settle for being able to disable transcoding in my 4k library
With kill_stream.py script and tautulli, you can forbid any 4K transcoding easily. I use it to kill any tentative of transcoding 4K with PGS burn in, because this is the only case where my CPU would be on his knees.
Thats awesome! I wish we didnt have to rely on third party software for what seems like a trivial modification of the «dissable video stream transcoding» toggle.
Just add a «dissable 4K video transcoding» option as well.
Please Plex, make it happen
I must be missing somthing as to why this must be so difficult to implement. A fix is to create a new library solo for 4k or use a 3rd party tool?
Yes, good suggestion!
Or just a ‘maximum resolution’ -setting in the transcoder options would be nice…
Better jet; set ‘max. resolution per user’ and/or ‘local/remote max. resolution’ setting or somekind.
all of this is mostly a bug request… and still is completely ignored by plex
It falls under another one of these requests where its difficult to think why it wouldnt take minutes to implement.
Its a simple rule is it not? like movie has a rating and we can say don’t play R rated movies under this account, surely this is the same thing “if Resolution = 4k… don’t display”… it even rhymes.
This there any sort of solution to not allow anyone to transcode 4k? I want it to be able to direct play only, and if it has to transcode 4k not allow it and instead just play the 1080p version?
Bumping this again as there seems to be no good fix yet. Just want to be able to have “Disable video stream transcoding” in the advanced options for my 4K library. Disabling it for my whole server is not an option as my CPU can handle many at once (except for 4K) and seems like someones always transcoding on a older device/os which is fine. 4K transcoding pegs my CPU hard and is not fine. If a user wants 4K they need to have the hardware/bandwidth/knowledge to watch it. But if a user has older devices that need to trascode 1080/720 down to SD they shoudn’t suffer cause i disabled all video transcoding.
EDIT: reading thu other peoples replies i decided to try to do this with Tautulli (which i already run) like others have done. Took about 30 minutes to figure it out and works wonderful. Can google Tautulli to disable 4K transcoding and different pages pop up to help you. I used the one below…
I just had to change “Transcode Decision is transcode” to “Video Decision is transcode” to make it work correctly. IF you dont change that it will stop any 4K video playing if any part (subs, audio, video) is transcoding.
Hope this helps some of you all!
I would love to see this. I have plex made a 1080p version of everything 4k but i still see people transcoding 4k… actually pisses me right off
