At last, I have some news for you all. We’re pushing to add the ability to manually disable/enable News on a per-account basis via Plex Web in the next web release. It’s considered a blocker for that release, which means if its not ready, the update won’t ship. We’re shooting for a release by the end of this month or sooner, but could slip a little if more time is needed for the release work to be finished.
@kinoCharlino thanks for the update
Thanks @kinoCharlino , suggest you remove the News feature completely if that is less work…
and great thanks to @sica , I shall DNS the crap out of it…
Managing Access to Plex News has gone live
I’m excited to share with you all that the ability to enable and disable Plex News has arrived today. Access to Plex News is now controlled at an account-level basis. If you choose to enable or disable News, then that will apply to all Plex apps signed in to the same Plex account. The only exception to this is that the admin of a Plex Home can control general News availability for Managed Users in the Plex Home, too. (Managed Users cannot control their own News availability.) If you choose to disable News for an account, then it will not appear anywhere in Plex apps associated with that account.
You can access the setting under Account > Online Media Sources
when signed in to the Plex Web App with the account in question. When editing the setting, the available choices are:
- Enabled: News will be available for the current account (and any Managed Users in a hosted Plex Home the account administers)
- Disabled: News will not appear anywhere in apps for the current account (nor will it appear for any Managed Users in a Plex Home the account administers)
- Disabled for Managed Users: News will be available for the current account but will not appear for any Managed Users in a Plex Home the account administers (default selection)
Notes:
You may have to restart your Plex app or switch between users to see changes to this setting take effect.
The account setting is currently in the hosted web app only, until the bundled app is updated.
Ok, so I have stopped Plex, restarted, refreshed my browser and I still don’t see “Online Media Sources”
Is this something that rolls out slowly to all users or?
Thanks
Chris

It has been rolled out to everyone. Are you using the hosted web app or the bundled web app? Until the bundled app is updated, you need to use the hosted web app. Try this direct link: https://app.plex.tv/desktop#!/account/online-media-sources

Thank you.

It’s not in your server settings. Click your profile avatar in the top right corner, then click “Account” (which is the top option on the drop down menu). Then, on the next screen, “Online Media Sources” is on the side bar on the left, the sixth option down.

Well I have a kids managed user with parental controls. Since a recent update News has now showed up in my kids managed user account. violent news at that which my 4 & 9 year old stumbled across.
There is no options in the managed user to turn this off or disable news. In trying to find it I also noticed that the managed user can now also modify PMP settings which they couldn’t in the past.

I assume this never shipped? Or was it rolled back? options to disable news are no where to be found.

It shipped a while back. In Plex Web. its in the online media sources section of your account settings (in the admin account, not the managed users). From there you can set the option Disabled for Managed Users
which will keep the feature active only for the admin account, or you can select Disabled
and it will turn it off from the admin and managed users. If you are still seeing News in your managed user accounts after this has been set to either of the disabled settings, try logging them out of your Plex account (in the player device) and log them back in.

Just a note that disabling News cannot be done by the managed user themselves (while logged in as them). It must be done by the account admin. Use your account to adjust it in your account settings. Here’s a shortcut to it: https://app.plex.tv/desktop#!/account/online-media-sources
Thanks, I spent an hour or two last night looking and am sure I also looked under the admin account finding only “very minimal” options to manage News sources, not to disable them. I’ll check again tonight.
I’m just pretty pissed that my managed users (4 and 9 year old’s) were suddenly watching violent news about Syria, NK and the US school shootings.
Why wasn’t this an opt-in instead of an opt-out from the start is my question. Plex needs to turn all it’s new features of this nature into Opt-in first to avoid this nonsense.
