Disable Subtitles on Live TV in Android App

Server Version#: 1.18.1.1966 on Synology DS918+
Player Version#: 7.23.0.13018
OTA: HDHomeRun Connect

In the Android player there is a nice interface to control Quality, Audio and Subtitles for content that is not Live TV.

However, for Live TV there are no options for subtitles to be enabled or disabled like existing content. It seems there have been other threads about it but it’s mostly revolved around iOS devices (Apple TV), or an ugly hack to disable subtitles on all media from the server side which is not awesome.

If I’m at home, and I want to watch Live TV on my Android device it’s easier to use a non-Plex app (HDHomeRun app) but then I lose the ability to timeshift or record on the fly (bye-bye DVR capability).

Can I ask for the slick configuration interface for existing content to be ported over to the Live TV options?

Nice - existing content!

Not awesome: Live TV

If you open another video (something existing) and turn the subtitles off, then go launch live TV are subtitles still enabled? Perhaps the same setting is applying to live TV but not exposed.

Also, what do you have set in “Settings” → “Account” under “Audio and Subtitles”?

Perhaps you’ve got them forced on and it is respecting that?

Thanks for the suggestions!

In regards to post #3, Live TV subtitles are always on, all the time. Regardless of playing other media.

In regards to post #4, that’s on the server side, and I prefer subtitles on for my media, but I don’t prefer them for Live TV (as most of the time when I’m watching live tv I’m watching sports and don’t need the subtitles). If I change that setting, it would impact most of my watching.

Thinking out-loud: I guess I could create another user and set their subtitles to always disabled, and use that account most of the time on my Android device, but I really feel like that’s something I shouldn’t have to do as we have a nice interface to choose whether subtitles are enabled, but it’s not an option for Live TV.

Can you try turning them off globally, test and then turn them back on? It’d be good to see if the Android App is just respecting that setting, as I suspect it is since you have it on.

At that point at least the app developers understand where the setting is coming from to provide that override.

Your feature request then changes a bit from a product management/product owner stand point to say something like “I want to override my server subtitle setting on the fly in live TV”

I agree your workaround would likely work, but I also agree that its pretty clunky at best.

Your other work around option is to globally disable them and use the per-media override to turn them on when you watch things that have that menu option. If your normal use case is having them on however that too is pretty unfortunate.

So, did some tests today:

  • Created a 2nd account to use on my phone. Set subtitles to “manually selected”
  • This had subtitles not auto-activate on Android for Live TV and Regular Media.
  • Used primary account and changed “Auto Select Subtitle Mode” from “Always enabled” to “Manually Selected” and Live TV subtitles did not show up in the Android client.

So, @iced98lx as you suspected, the global setting is being respected in the Android app, and it goes back to my original request of “Can Plex offer an option to disable them in Live TV like we do on normal media” which is why I posted screenshots of the Android client above- to show multiple quality options, multiple audio options (like normal and SAP for OTA) and the option to enable/disable subtitles. My opinion is the framework is already there for the nice view, so why not add that to Live TV.

For the mean time I’ll use the “android user” on my phone and enable subtitles manually until Plex can offer a similar setting experience between the two. Of course, I’ll lose track of what media I’ve watched, unless I switch accounts back and forth.

Hello,

I just ran into the same problem.
PMS version 1.18.3.2156, player on Nvidia Shield.

I tried to untick “Automatically select audio and subtitle tracks” on the server side through the web app : doesn’t work
Into the app, I found a “Subtitles” menu, but the only options are “Automatic”, “Only image format”, and “Always”.

None of them disabled subtitles…

Did I do something wrong ?

Finally found it on server side. I join a screenshot in case someone else wonders how.

But that remains a workaround, there should be a menu in live tv playback to select audio and subtitle tracks, just like for any other video.
