Disconnecting HDD

hi at all,

I just wondered what would happen if I disconnected my HDD to swap it or another one? would plex delete the media files in its database so that I have to tag everything again after reconnecting?
or do database entries stay forever?

best wishes.

It depends.

If the newly connected hard drive is assigned the same drive letter as the other one, Plex may assume that all the content on the other drive has been removed.
It therefore may remove those items from its database as well.

In general, it is absolutely not recommended to juggle with removable drives while Plex is running.
If you absolutely have to do it, make sure that each individual drive is getting a unique and permanent drive letter. https://www.windowscentral.com/how-assign-permanent-drive-letter-windows-10
Plex server needs a stop and restart after you add or remove drives.

Further tips to avoid disaster:

  • don’t point Plex to “naked” drive letters (e.g. K:)
Always create subfolders and add these to Plex’s libraries
  • if you have several drives with e.g. “Movie” type content, give the subfolder on each drive different folder names, e.g. \Movies1, \Movies2 etc…

If your media are not stored inside the Plex server device, disable
Settings - Server - Library - “Empty trash automatically after every scan”

Before you are going to empty the trash manually, check your libraries if there are any ‘trash can’ icons overlaid on your thumbnails.
If there are, investigate those item’s media info and verify the storage location. If the file name and folder are indeed correct and available, perform a ‘Scan Library Files’, after which Plex should have recognized that the files are present again and remove the trash can icons.

I have a drive that is detected as removable wrongly. it cannot be undone. I used bitlocker on it so it will not automatically detect on the next restart. guess I will have to delete the auto start entry for plex, then configure auto unlock of the bitlocker drive and then restart plex.

thanks for your help.
