Discussion of Multiple Editions

I was just replying to above saying 3) is an additional new change.

Oops. I thought these were requests. Nevermind.

Edit - For 1 I was referring to the library view not showing the edition tag. That is coming.

Yeah but like, sending everybody to the bottom of the page only really works when they already know there are different editions available…

The less technically inclined need something front and centre, not hidden at the bottom of the page. We need an option to switch similar to how seasons work :eyes: (maybe even make it a per library option and leave the choice up to us how we want it)

I guess it’s time bring out your mock up again

For the web version I good imagine something like a Drop Down Menu that could be triggered by clicking on the newly implemented label.

@Mowee This is exactly how Emby handles multiple versions. Attached is an example. On the library grid there is 1 poster…then in the details you see the “Version” (aka “Edition” in Plex) with a dropdown to select the version you want to watch. I totally agree that Plex should implement this instead of multiple posters for editions on the library grid.
This not only cleans up the library grid, but also serves @tdeverx input to have it front and center…not all the way down on the details page that many would never scroll down to.

Don’t, I had to stop myself hahaha

I am enjoying this new feature - it allows me to have custom artwork per edition and keep them separate, instead of having the special edition version as a ‘featurette’.

Thanks!

It would be really cool if they set it up this way using all the same {edition} tags as current:

Separate folders: Separate library entries
Same folder: Dropdown menu

I know there’s some division about it. This way, everybody wins?

I have opened a corresponding feature request and allowed myself to reference the idea.: Possibility to hide editions from grid

Loving the new addition of Multiple Editions!

One suggestion: Can you please move the “Other Editions…” to be above the Cast listing or someplace more prominent? How about a “+1…2…3…” or “See More Editions” link next to the current edition text (Oh, I see someone suggested a pull-down…that would be great too)? Right now it is difficult to tell if there really are multiple editions of the movie you are looking at.

This is awesome!

See, I make my own cuts of movies to remove objectionable materials. So, now I can display my cuts along with the original movies, if I wish. This also allows me to only share my cuts with my kids but allows my wife and I to see either cut.

I agree, multiple editions and the ability to choose them needs to be up near the play button, along with the chooser for audio tracks and subtitle tracks.

However, as a temporary hack, put a sign right under the poster that says more editions below, until something more streamlined can be created.

One other question, I know its been addressed that when you set up editions for a movie, it removes the ability to use local extras with it. Is there progress being made to correct that? I’m not super crazy about having to choose whether I use one feature or another.

I have localized extras for mine. I have separate folders per edition.

For example:

Blade Runner_ The Final Cut (1982) is the folder name.
Then I have the actual video file (Blade Runner_ The Final Cut (1982).mkv) along with the extras (named -featurette, -trailer, etc) in the same folder.

I haven’t put any edition information in, either in the folder/file names or the metadata tags. My system still shows the other editions in the pre-play screen when I select a movie (and like you, all my movies are in separate folders). So I’m a bit perplexed why we need to explicitly specify an edition tag.

Also, since you apparently don’t have to define edition tags, perhaps the local extras will continue to work - ??

2 Questions…

Should the folder structure change for this, or are we able to simply rename the individual files with the {} brackets wrapped around the edition (most of my stuff with 2 editions just have a period separating the edition in the file name. For Example.

  1. I have Star Wars A new Home it currently looks like
/Movies
   /Star Wars - Episode IV - A New Hope (1977)
      Star Wars - Episode IV - A New Hope (1977) {Special Edition}.mkv
Star Wars - Episode IV - A New Hope (1977).mkv

Should it actually be:

/Movies
   /Star Wars - Episode IV - A New Hope (1977) {Special Edition}
      Star Wars - Episode IV - A New Hope (1977) {Special Edition}.mkv
   /Star Wars - Episode IV - A New Hope (1977)
Star Wars - Episode IV - A New Hope (1977).mkv
  1. Will this also work for TV Shows? I have 2 separate versions of Star Trek The Original Series. One that has the original 1966 cut scenes for the first 2 season and one that has the updated computer rendered ones. It would be nice to differentiate the two as they are both blue ray rips for seasons 1 and 2.

  1. You need the edition keyword (i.e. {edition-Special Edition})

  2. TV shows are not currently supported, the initial release is for movies only.

It works both ways as long as they’re tagged. I keep mine in the same folder. Others do not.

I never really thought about this, but I guess if you’ve already got yours split apart, there would only be the minor benefit of showing the edition tag in the preplay screen?

  1. Yup totally missed that…It was late when I saw this and I was trying to do some work (Ah the life of IT)

  2. Hopefully soon™

I’d also like to add. The ability to have a single item in the library that has a drop down or something to select the edition instead of two or more separate items in the library. As it is right now, most views do not show which edition you are selecting. Just two Items with the exact same title (Unless the server owner changes the actual cover art). Over all a good start.
