It’s live in the latest beta, can’t believe this day has finally come…
Saw this just rolled out and might be experiencing an issue. I have a movie with two editions, and two Featurettes. It appears that the Featurettes are no longer available in the web or Roku app interfaces after I’ve split the editions.
Both editions exist in the same folder, which are named using the {edition-Edition Name} format, along with the Featurettes folder containing two additional files.
yeah it has always been a pain point with Split Apart and will probably be a bigger issue with editions. The issue is something to do with it not knowing which movie to put the extras with as it is expecting a folder to have one movie (versions would be one movie) and editions or splitting apart makes it two. There is a report made to try to figure that out.
Great that we now have a version of this to see in action and play with.
I would definitely prefer to see all editions condensed under one entry though rather than, for example, Payback (1999) appearing twice in my library.
I totally wouldn’t mind if they appeared with both. That’s what I’d expect the behavior to be. Thanks for clarifying.
This is a huge step! But I do agree with others here that there should be a way to collapse titles into one and select the edition from there.
Currently, as a workaround I made a collection in my library that is called “Alternate Versions” and I just tag the different versions of movies into there. Since I have that collection set to hide the items in it, they don’t show up inline with the rest of my library. But there is no way to hide that collection entirely so it is kind of annoying that it has to be there.
So just tried it out. Evidently if you have multiple versions/editions of a movie, merging them together using the “editions” does NOT do anything at all. They still have to be broken out into separate movies. If if they are merged, the “other editions” doesn’t even work!
Essentially, from what I can see…all this “editions” feature did was slap the verbiage on the details page. Basically exactly what most of us have been doing by editing the titles with something like “(Theatrical Version)”.
Totally agree with Orange_GT3…REALLY need to see the movies condensed into 1 entry and from the details section, let the user select the version. Anything other than implementing this nothing has really changed at all other than another means to label.
If they’re actually merged, you’re dealing with different (quality) versions of the same item – not editions.
Honestly, it doesn’t make logical sense to have the Editions split in the library though, literally nobody is going to be “OH I want to watch X version tonight”, you simply just want to watch the movie and having the option of which Edition is waaay more user friendly / intuitive.
This is actually how it works via search, it presents an option of which Edition you want. However, that was clearly an oversight because it’s using the same UI as Versions. How is one suppose to know which Edition is which when all you’re telling me is the library location and the quality ![]()
Tbh I’m happy with how it works in search, I just want to be able to see which Edition is which and I’d much rather an updated UI that gets carried over to the library, rather than what you’re probably going to do and populate all editions in search ![]()
True and that is what the devs have brought up in the past. If they implemented “editions” as a means to get started working on getting this displayed correctly if merged…then fine. But it has taken 12 years of asking up to this point.
BigWheel did mention to me that some will not be satisfied or like the implementation. In my humble opinion, I just think it makes alot more sense to have all the versions/editions condensed under the details page and enable the user to select the version/edition they want to play either from a drop-down, other version selection etc. But on the library grid…just show 1 poster/movie.
A counter point - It does make sense for the people that like customizing different posters for different editions.
Of course this isn’t everyone.
But you can see custom artwork on detail pages presenting the editions as well as front & centre when you select one ![]()
But you are right, it ain’t everybody. Do I personally like it this way? Nope, do I care enough to spit my dummy out? Not worth it, will I voice my distaste? Of-corse I will hahaha but beggars cant be choosers and something is better than nothing imo
Ideally, there would be an option in the settings to allow different UIs. Now that the back end work is done in the database to allow this functionality, it shouldn’t be beyond the devs to present the information in different formats, i.e. condensed to single entry or multiple entries.
I do appreciate the number of platforms that Plex support, so there would be a fair amount of UI testing to be done.
Even though I understand why people prefer to do a lot of customization on there end I certainly don’t want to find an appropriate poster for every edition.
But now that the groundwork has been made, I feel optimistic that there will soon be a way to turn it on and off.
I’d prefer a single entry with a selector as well. It feels like more work for me to find a different poster just to show that it’s not the same as the original. I also wish there was a way to see it in the title of the entry. They all display the same when split out.
I know there’s lots of talk about differentiating between versions and editions. I may be in the minority in my use case, but I’d group all of those together as a preference. 1080p, 4k, 4k Special Edition, 1080p Theatrical Release… Although I appreciate the case to differentiate between version and edition, in the end, all I’m doing is selecting a file to watch.
Appreciate the work thus far. Looking forward to next steps.
Just to be clear. The main additions here are 1) the ability to have a label in the movie saying what version it is and 2) the ability to jump from that screen to another version of that movie.
Yet if all the movies are split out in the library we can already name them which version they are and hopefully you aren’t clicking on version one when you want version two.
Hoping his is just step one in the process. Eventually providing an option to merge these to one movie presented in the library with the options to switch to an alternate version once you open it would be really nice.
I have just used the chance and installed the latest update to test the new feature directly myself. I had not yet installed the beta.
Here is my attempt to give a more detailed opinion which does not claim to be complete. This post is only my personal opinion and is not intended to badly present the work as such but only to highlight points that could be improved from my point of view.
Pro:
The flexibility of use is great. It’s fantastic that there was no attempt to limit itself to a pre-made list here. I like the possibility that I don’t have to rely on naming via input field and can also catalog via filename accordingly.
Friends of various movie posters have the ability to maintain them and are not limited in their use.
Cons:
Using it via the GUI currently still feels a bit hard to understand. When I search for a movie, a +1 tells me that there are multiple editions of a movie. Here the movie posters are not used at all, so I can’t differentiate. Currently, I have to guess which version is the right one.
For me, an edition of a film is not a new film in that sense. Therefore, it makes little sense for me to display both in the grid with the other films. Here I would like to have the possibility to combine these movies.
That this raises new questions such as which edition is the main edition is clear. But other problems are no longer an issue.
The section of the other editions is very hidden far down. Here I would like to see a more present possibility to switch back and forth between the different editions.
In my Apple TV app, it is also not at all obvious which edition the other editions are.
Conclusion:
It’s great to see that the community’s wish for a differentiation of different versions has finally been heard. There is certainly still some fine-tuning needed in the chosen solution, but the basic approach is exactly the right one. Thank you very much for your work ![]()
- Continue watching not showing all the different editions when you are halfway through a movie.
Well to be honest, I took all the different versions I had and put them in an OTHER folder and they just show up after the trailers below. Normally there is only one version of a movie I want to watch anyway. Original release Star Wars vs Special Eddition, Theatrical vs. Dir Cut LOTR, etc. So my favorite version is what is listed and all the also rans are listed below if you want them. The fact that it doesn’t keep up with where you are is a real first world problem in my eyes.
I’ve closed the feature request as implemented and moved this discussion to a new thread.
That will be coming in a future update.
- the ability to jump from that screen to another version of that movie.
Use the “Other Editions” hub at the bottom.
Do you want that to happen? That was the big complaint with versions.
