Display messages to all friends about server down time / maintenace

The Problem:
I have Friends and Family all over the world that enjoy my Media. I was looking for an easy way to let them know that my Plex Server will be down for maintanance on a specific date and a specific Time. I coulnd not find one.

Note: I am only refering to Videos in this post to keep it short, but Music and Pitures are also ment. Just replace the word “Video” with “Audio” or “Picture” to get your fantasy going

The Work Around:
So my work around is that I created an new library named “Info Channel” I do short 1 to 2 minutes videos where I announce the server downtime (I will upload samples - sorry for the poor quality of the uploads but I had

to compress in order to upload them at all). I shared the library to all my Friends and Family select the library to be shown in recommendations etc. all that yielded little to no success. I still get a nervous texts or calls when my server is down on an annnouced down time.

Possible New Feature:
Various ways to tackle this problem come to my mind but I suggest these two

  • I would love to see a feature like a Pop Up Window with text I could choose.
  • In stead of a Pop Up Window it could also be a “Forced Video” like the ones I use now.

Possible Trigger Events:
There are several Trigger events pausible, it could be also a selection of more that one

  • When the user chooses to watch a Videos
  • When the user chooses a diffrent Library
    (This opens the possibility to have to have announcements just for certain Libraries [I once moved a library to a diffrent hard drive all others would have been accessable during the copy process])
  • When a new user opens my plex on his device for the first time.
    ( I would use that to explain the content of my libraries, how I structured them so they dont get lost searching for somethin that is in a diffrent library etc.)
  • When a New to Plex (account created less tham 48hours ago) User opens my Plex (Many of my new Freinds are also new to Plex. That would open the possibilities to explain in a personal indroduction Video tailored to my Plex Server the basics of Plex like how to pin libraries or how to use the filters in the libraries or how to creat a play list.

Frequency / Durations:

  • For Server Availability Announcements: Once a day until the down time happens.
  • For User “New to My Server” or “New to Plex”: Once with option to replay or a “run again option” under Help etc.

You should add your vote to it, but I’m sure @tom80H will be around at some point to let you know something similar.

I do not see why this needs to be a feature for Plex. Email seems to me to work fine for this type of thing and it even works if Plex is down which would be the case if you had some kind of crash that was preventing Plex from working or even starting.
It seems like it would be a total waste of time and effort for Plex to implement internal messaging.

Thx Shark2k for letting me know. I searched before I posted but could not find anything similar. No wonder when the original post was 11 Years ago.
