DLNA stops playing music

Server Version#: 1.18.0.1944

Hi all,

since beginning of October, very likely after updating Plex to the most recent versions at that time, I can basically no longer use the DLNA feature to play Music. Here is what will happen:

  • I start playing an album
  • DLNA stops playing after the song is over and the next shall start or after ~ 8 minutes … whichever comes first
  • Every consecutive attempt to access Plex DLNA is being quit with an “Access Error”
  • Starting from that point on, every ~9 minutes Plex is accessing sentry.io to upload a crashdump file, which seem to fail.
  • To enable DLNA again, I need to restart Plex

Please note that “access” to Plex DLNA service in this case is made via Yamaha’s “MusicCast” app. However, playing for example Internet Radio via MusicCast or Music via Airplay/iTunes to the same devices is possible for hours. Please also note that only DLNA is affected. Playing music or other content from Plex with the web client or client app is possible without interruption (even in the “crashed” state).

My environment:
DLNA devices -> Yamaha WX-030 (wireless), Yamaha WX-010 (wireless), Yamaha V683 (wired)
Server hardware -> QNAP TS-877
Network -> Unifi 16-port gigabit switch and Unifi Access Points

So far, I have made every test I can think of with my available equipment. All devices are currently running the latest firmware/software release available. Any advice or help in this matter is very much appreciated.

Hi all,

currently running Plex 1.18.2.2058 and qnap QTS 4.4.1.1117 …

The described behavior remains the same. With “Crash Reports” on, the DLNA service is crashing every ~ 8 Minutes and restarting, which is basically the reason why playback via DLNA stops.

However, with “Crash Reports” feature disabled, the DLNA service is not stopping and playback of music continues uninterrupted. So on the user side everything seems to be fine … BUT … now the DLNA log file is flooded with “[0x7f7e12599700] WARN - Crash: Crash reporting disabled” or similiar lines in 10ms (!) intervals, furthermore I can see a constant 3% CPU load in my QNAP from the DLNA service.

Any advice, a workaround of better a fix in this matter is very much appreciated.

Hi all,

after several troubleshooting sessions I was able to drill down to the root cause of this. To make a long story short, a small InternetRadio device turns out to be the culprit.

The device has also a DLNA client implemented which ran amok. Basically it opened TCP sessions to the Plex DLNA server but never closed them right, so that invalid sessions pile up until finally the DLNA server crashed and the loop restarts … Why it started in the first place, I don’t know. Maybe it was due to changes after the Plex Update from October, maybe it was caused by an Firmwareupgrade on the device itself.

I worked around the issue by moving the InternetRadio device into another network segment with no connection whatsoever to the Plex Server.

regards.
