What is going on here…
I reinstalled Kodi on my Rpi with the plex app. I manually added in the plex settings my local network available Plex server, yet logging/linking my plex player it looks that it is only looking at my domain name I have running from home.
Inside my network I can’t seem to find the solution for this idiotic problem, when at home I ask in a browser for my domain name, it can not find anything related, yet when I address to the ip address of my domain server, I get a smooth connection.
Outside my home, every other plex device connects perfectly to my domain name server… Now, why can I not tell local to my RPI that it must look at my servers IP address and not to a domain name.
Linking the RPI-plex to my account, gives the right info for outside on the WWW, but why not listening to the inside IP. This is a programming piece that can be resolved. I hate to change my account to an IP address, because then also my internal plex can not find that-simply because it is outside of my local ip range (10...*)
So, Are there people from plex who can actually program this part of the applications, or do I have to leave/live with this frustration that is happening…
Simpelest way is put a priority in plex apps to listen to various ip addresses(there are two possibilities in the app to change server address, but that does not work at all, it still listens to the account from me - ergo, the domain name…)
Translating your domain name to your internal IP is done by your DNS, specifically something called DNS rebinding. Check if your router is blocking this. See the bottom of this support article for more information How to Use Secure Server Connections | Plex Support.
The DNS does resolve nicely, I had added a pi-hole in my network not long ago, and I forgot to put a local DNS record in it(domain = ip address) before I did that I could not go on my internal network straight to my domain, it could not find it, like the plex client can’t either, even when I add the servers local ip addresses in it, but when I added that local DNS record, I could go on computers to my domain.
The plex client can’t, it simply does not know how to handle this problem or even an option in the software (the APP) that can redirect traffic to the right place.
So, is my network sufficient? Yes, I think so. Is every PLEX APP that there is insufficient? I think so too. (Tried until tears ran down my face from frustration on android and Rpi)
There are simply not enough possibilities to make these kind of specific settings happen.
And this is not only Raspberry Pi, but for Android, IOS, and so on…
Who is responsible about these apps? Who approved them into the world? was it a quick and dirty release so that Plex could say: “We have covered all devices!!!”
I really would like to know from the developers why such decision was made, to put half baked settings in the plex app for Kodi (as an example)

That is correct. Some apps are unable to manually resolve a DNS record on their own, it relies on the DNS server to do this.
I don’t think the Kodi add-on can do this, but Android and iOS should be able to handle this. Keep in mind that the Kodi add-in hasn’t been updated in a long. It’s not an unsupported client, but there is no active support for it either.
For these types of clients, you’ll need to configure your pi to handle the resolution properly.
Is this not a huge mistake? making one of the best streaming server software I have seen and when it comes to client side… you lack of any knowledge or … what is it?
The pi is not configurable(I cannot configure it), the pi has kodi onboard and then the app…
I thought you were the programmers…
Here is where you and your team should jump in, make the community aware that you ‘forgot’ to properly support the client side, make us happy again and do not let us hang out dry there…
I am dead serious when I talk about the server side, 90% of the time I work with it, it works, does exactly what it needs, does tremendous things even when the network is blasting full of packets. Ok, my needs are not like those 4K and 8K guys, but 1080 is almost always the asked quality. When going to players, subtitles run off, in kodi keypresses to switch subtitles does not work, when I want to change the subtitles offset, the screen of that covers the area where I want to see if the titles are good, so I can’t, I have to get out of that menu, let the movie or what run, see that it is still off, then I need to pause, go to the settings etc. etc. etc… Tedious painstaking uncanning bad programming in my humble opinion.
I wish there was like in VLC a simple key press to adjust up and down the subtitles in time…
(Not talking about where the subs need to be, that is not the matter here)
So, I hope you can relate to some of these problems, and that I also hope that your team is willing to update these things, this is a problem…
