This is my first experience of using the pi and Rasplex. I found the setup very easy and once cached it's fairly responsive. However anytime I try to play video (SD or HD mkv) it will play a few frames and stutter and then just stop playing. In some cases it won't play the tvshow/film at all. I don't want to really transcode everything that I play.
Do I need to download and install codecs to get the video files to play correctly?
I have the 512mb, 8gb class 10 card, using a wireless usb card.
you don't need to install any codecs except for playing mpeg2 and wmv.
So mkv files for example will play without any transcoding.
I think the problem you have is, that the raspberry is not powerful enough to play files (mostly full HD files) with high bitrates without stuttering.
Imao there are 2 options now:
- Until end of this week the great people developing rasplex will release a new version (0.4.0) that maybe handles this issue pretty good. So simply wait a few days and try again with the new version (you can also try with the latest experimental build right now)
- Overclock cpu and ram of your raspberry (there are a lot of threads in this forum or at rasplex forum.) I did it this way with success the last month.
I run successful with this config (playing 20 GB mkv files with DTS-HD audio and 1080p):
Hi guys, okay followed this advice and turns out it wifi was the issue. I'm using the latest version recently released and wifi has the same problem. Over wired everything is fine.
Another problem I had using wireless was that it floods the whole network rendering anything device useless and not able to find use the internet. Finally I can't seem to control rasplex from pled on my iPhone. I'll open separate threads on both of these.
