Do I need to upgrade to a newer Synology NAS? Slow and unstable currently

Server Version#:DSM 6.2.4-25556 (DS115J)
Player Version#: 4.54.5

I’ve currently got a DS115J as my first foray into the world of NAS servers. I love the concept, and for a while the DS apps were okay for streaming my music in particular outside my local network (albeit it took some time to sign in and get going).

I was trying out Plex to see how it fared as an alternative to streaming outside my network and i was impressed by the speed to login and pull up one of my test songs compared to DS Audio.

My issue seems to be now that i’ve set up my libraries (after creating new NAS folders and fighting with the language dropdown) and scanned it all in, my CPU seems to to be at 100% constantly and things are generally sluggish. Trying to change any of the server settings in the Plex web app is hit or miss as to whether they load the page, and now my music library won’t scan for all the new tunes I threw in (it gives a network error, but scans other libraries fine).

Before I invest $300 for a DS220+, will a NAS upgrade actually result in snappier performance? I really want to make Plex work, but since I’ve had my NAS it feels like one headache after the next to make things work, and waiting for it to finish the step before I move on.

Should I consider a different brand, if I want things to “just work” out of the box? Or just the PC route and work with what I’m familiar with?

What started as an explosion of tinkering and exploring has now become frustrating; I really want to make this NAS concept work!

It’s nice to know my struggles are pinned to just having outdated hardware then!

I’ll uninstall plex for now, but keep the folders/user info for when I transfer into a new NAS. Or can I delete my Plex media folders (copies of /video and /music) and just move them later on the new NAS? Is there anything else you can recommend to make the eventual transition to a new NAS easier?

I wish there was some sort of minimum spec requirement for running Plex, or at least a better idea of what one can do per each model for apps and stuff. I keep going into new projects all starry-eyed (Sonarr, Couch Potato, Lidarr, ect.) and have to backtrack when it freezes things or stops working.

I suppose for now I should be content with DS audio and Kodi to access files client-side.

Time to start saving my pennies!

Considering I only JUUUUST started to set this up, I’ll take my chances with a fresh install and hope the new NAS won’t take a weekend to set up. Thank you for all your help, regardless!
