I “still” rip to the same basic settings I always have used. That is a normal 1080p for films using color and 720p or even 480p for most black and white. My old eyes are not good enough for dubious improvements to make a difference.
Of course that means that my “large” movies are almost never over 4 gb or under 1 gb. That works well for me and I feel no need for “better.”
Nitpicking: what you are ripping from your discs is already compressed.
