I was thinking of getting the new Apple TV but it doesn’t support h.265 so I was wondering if a player exists that does direct 4K playback
If it matters my server is a 2012 Mac mini i5 and I don’t think it could handle the transcoding required

Maybe the Shield? Not really sure.
Any hardware that can run either Plex Media Player or Emby.
(and is officially 4K- and HEVC-ready)
(notice: ‘Plex Media Player’ is not a generic term for any Plex client. It means the ‘full size’ Plex client that is based on the ‘mpv’ player engine and runs on PC, Mac and some very few embedded platforms. If the hardware can handle 4K, then PMP and Kodi can handle it as well.)
What makes you think that the new Apple TV doesn’t support h.265 (HEVC)? It’s one of the key new features.

what he really meant is in apple specs sheet of the new apple tv, it can do h.265. there are other devices too support particular formats but the problem lies on plex software. its hasnt been implemented to take advantage of the hardware of the device. the same thing can be said with hardware transcoding in plex server, its in plex developers discretion to unlock it because no matter you beef up your server with graphics cards, it wont help your cpu load transcoding videos.

i think nvidia shield could do what youre asking. weetek play is another one capable doing 4k direct play.
Shield TV can. The new Apple TV can if you update the profile, I’d assume.
Roku can do it.

Plex generally uses the device’s native player so h.265 should be supported.
