Does anyone have an issue with blue borders when playing videos with wide aspect ratios?

I am playing a video on my PS4 with an aspect ratio of 2.40:1 (1920x800) and the top and bottom borders are noticeably blue instead of black. I played the video through the Plex app on my Samsung TV and the borders are normal, so I know it has something to do with the PS4.

Any information would be appreciated.

Hello, i have the same problem since today… We need a other update quickly please. Plex is life ! Thank’s

Thanks folks for comments. We’re not sure what’s causing this. Something fishy in the video player or the HDMI handling is our primary guess.

Mind helping us with some details we can use to recreate this?

  • The XML Media information for a video which is showing blue bars
  • Version of your Plex Media Server
  • What are your RGB Range and Deep Color Output setting values in the PS4 Settings > Sound and Screen > Video Output Settings menu?
  • Is your PS4 connected directly to your TV?
  • Do you see blue bars when playing the following 60s clips of Big Buck Bunny?

Hi Matt,

Thanks for your response. Here are the answers you requested.

  • I have attached the Media Info
  • Server Version 0.9.16.6
  • RGB Range - Auto, Deep Color Output - Off (I changed them one at a time and tested it with my video and the two videos you provided, still the same blue bars.)
  • The PS4 Runs through a receiver, I bypassed the receiver and plugged directly into the TV. No change.
  • I get the same blue bars when playing the 2 videos you provided.

Please let me know if I can provide anymore troubleshooting information.

Same problem here.

Used the plex yesterday with the exact same setup (ps4 through receiver, no update since) without any issues. This just started tonight it seems and affects all movie that have borders not just 1 in particular.

Can confirm it’s been happening with mkv codec.

same here just started since the update

Same here. I updates and suddenly I get the blue borders that weren’t there last night.

Server Version 0.9.16.6
PS4 settings: Full range and auto deep color. I tried changing them and there was no change.

Thanks @ShiftyMcFly for the info. It’s interesting your get the blue bars on both videos. I spotted the blu(epu)rple bars most prevalently yesterday while watching an old anamorphic widescreen DVD rip. Watching a bluray remux, with similar letterboxing, didn’t show the bars. We’ll find it.

Thanks everyone else for pinging to show the issue is more common than we thought. It would be super helpful if you all can provide us some help isolating the root cause.

I also wanted to add that when I start the Plex app, just before showing the logo it briefly flashes the blueish colour on the whole screen for a couple of seconds.

On a 4:3 film playing on a 16:9 screen the bars on the sides are purple as well. Same for films that are not perfectly cropped for a full screen and have thin bars on the top and bottom of the video. Finally, when I exit a playing video there is sometimes a quick full screen flash of the same colour instead of a black screen like before.

Basically the rendered overlay mattes for any part of a screen that is not filled with the video is filled with the wrong colour. I guess that playing an old school letterboxed video where the video itself contains the black matte bars would play perfectly.

That’s what we’re finding. The background of the application is #111, a really dark gray. The PS4 is rendering it blurplish on some televisions. We’re changing the background to solid black. Instead of the blue noticed here…

…we’ll have a brief flash of black.

We starting the process to push a fresh PlayStation app store update with the background color change. Hang tight folks, we’ll do our best to expedite the update with Sony.

But this is a different matter to the matte bars filling with the wrong color. #111 was definitely not the color of the bars before! I guess the whole issue is related with the differences in the native rendering with the new update.

same problem since yesterday

Grazie mille.

Same problem since update !

Hi everyone. A Plex update is live which ensures we have a solid black background during video playback.

The Plex update will be downloaded automatically when the application starts - there is no PSN store update required.

Looking better?

Video playback is corrected, thanks so much for that quick fix.
Bleuish intro brackground still exist but I can live with it now that the video is corrected

Cheers

It’s also fixed on my side. Thanks. I can also confirm that the bluish intro is still there.

That is something that will be fixed in the next platform update.

Looks great @mattseeley. I’m a new user to Plex and I am blown away by how quickly this was resolved. Awesome work, great support.
