Does library scanning support additional folder levels for movies/shows?

Server Version#: Version 1.41.9.9961
Player Version#: Plex Web Version 4.146.0

Due to growing amount of movies/TV shows I tried to add another level of folders with the first character of the movie/show name to decrease the amount of scrolling.

movies
. . . .# (movies starting with a digit)
. . . . . . . <movie name>
. . . . . . . . . . . .<movie file>
. . . .A (movies starting with A)
. . . . . . . <movie name>
. . . . . . . . . . . .<movie file>

/shows
. . . .# (shows starting with a digit)
. . . . . . . <show name>
. . . . . . . . . . . .<season>
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .<episode file>
. . . .A (shows starting with A)
. . . . . . . <show name>
. . . . . . . . . . . .<season>
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .<episode file>

When scanning the libraries the movies are picked up correctly but for the shows some (not all) shows end up as episodes in a different show.

The episodes in the screenshot are all appearing under another show also starting with the letter G. It seems that every episode that is not scanned correctly does end up under another show starting with the same character.

If it would be possible to apply the file structure above, I would appreciate it but otherwise I will return to the recommended structure.

No this is not supported.

See this support article on naming for the best results: https://support.plex.tv/articles/naming-and-organizing-your-tv-show-files/

If you need to absolutely need to organize your media like this, you must add every index folder to your library. That way, you‘ll have a lot of folders added to the library, while the media in each of them is in line with the naming conventions.
If you do this, make sure not to create a recurring structure (e.g. pointing the library to the index folders AND the parent folder).

I believe, exploding the library structure like this might impact the scanning performance.

I use this structure for my music library, and I did have to add all 27 ABC# folders.

I could be wrong because I now have the best HDD I’ve ever had, but I don’t think it performs any worse with 27 folders vs 1-4.

It’s my understanding that movies can be detected in subfolders, though. Just not TV or music because the folder structure is so essential to grouping seasons and albums.

I use that structure for my movies, adding folders for #-Z plus a couple of more.

It is easy to add the additional folders. You do not have to browse the directory structure 27+ times.

Click “Browse for Media Folder” then type in the path and click Add.

Since all the folders have the same path, you can copy/paste then change the last letter.
