When I scan tv shows I have all shows each in a folder all inside one folder labeled TV SHOWS But now in Plex I have TV SHOWS with hundreds of episodes .What did I do wrong?
You’re not super specific about how you structured/named those files.
Still… my money is on you need to re-visit your naming.
Shows should be named like this:
TV Shows <- the folder linked to the Plex library
Show Name
Season XX
Show Name - sXXeYY - optional text, e.g. the episode title.ext
Show Name - sXXeYY.ext <- Plex will ignore all the optional text anyway
...
where XX is the season number, YY is the episode number (within that season) and .ext is the file extension.
Leave no folders away and add no additional layers.
If you had those shows already added to Plex… you might need to perform a “Plex Dance” after fixing the names for Plex to forget its cached information:
- move the show folder outside the folder linked to Plex
- Scan Library Files (library context menu:
...>Scan Library Files) - Empty Trash (library context menu:
...>Manage Library>Empty Trash) - Clean Bundles (Plex Settings:
Settings>[Server Name]>Manage>Troubleshooting>Clean Bundles) - verify the files are properly named, matching Plex’ naming schema and return them in place

OK so what I’m seeing is in the way that I have it structured is the hierarchy folder or the main folder says TV shows but then within that folder is every series each with its own folder. So I have a folder for NCIS a folder for law and order etc. But rather than seeing individual Siri it’s like it’s skipping all the folders completely yes and it’s just one series called TV shows Plex with hundreds of episodes.
Can you double-check the settings of that particular library… did you create it as a tv-show library (not just by name but by selecting tv-shows as the media kind for that library)?
Looks like you’re pointing that library to the parent folder of TV Shows Plex. With the given naming structure you’ll need to point it at that exact folder instead!
Otherwise Plex only sees the content of that parent folder… which is TV Shows Plex and considers that the name of the show you’re trying to add.
So I have to point at each series folder? Then I get a huge list of shows running down the side bar of plex. How do I just keep all shows in tv shows?
