I have the server up and running well, but i would like to tinker with the remote streaming setup. As of now, the 75 (or so) movies in the library are regular DVD quality. My question(s) is this, if I set the mobile streaming at 1.5Mbps, 480p, then go through and optimize all the movies (btw is there a way to do the whole library at once? I can’t seem to find that option, but I feel like I have seen it) will that really make that big of a difference on the server overhead? Or does it just eat up space for little benefit? All the remote streams will be primarily to iOS/Android phones.
If it doesn’t help that much, would doing a batch run in Handbrake then placing those videos in the library help more? Those would be of noticeably smaller size.
Thanks.
Hi there, Think of Optimization like this, say you have a new movie and you have 10 users who would like to watch this, the majority of which will watch it from their phones, but your current movie is in a format that requires your server to transcode this for each of them, and if you get to many transcodes going on at the same time everyone will suffer buffering pauses, but if you optimize this movie for mobile, then the ones using the phones can chose that version and your server will not need to transcode for them.
My server stat is in my signature and I have had up to 9 concurrent transcodes going on at once which was eating up a lot of resources. Now its down to 5 concurrent transcodes, which my server can manage without breaking a sweat.
Thanks for the reply.
It still relies on them choosing the correct version, right? Can I force the server to automatically stream a certain version to all remote users?

Short answer: Yes, No.
When a remote user tries to play something with multiple versions, they will be able to choose a version. You can’t force only remote users to use specific versions of files.
If your users select a file Optimised for TV, for example, but their internet is too poor, or it needs to be 720p instead of 1080p, the transcoder will actually kick in and transcode that version further.
Actually you could sort of force users to only use your optimized versions.
This is how, create a library share called “MyShared” (you can name it whatever you want) Add a folder that only has optimized versions of movies or tv shows etc…
Then you share that library with your friend whom are not local, all they will see would be the optimized versions. As you optimize more videos and add them to that folder they will have more available to watch.
