Does Plex Live TV require cable TV service?

I’m looking to “cut the cord” and ditch my cable tv service. I’m with Optimum (New York). Do I need to keep my cable tv service for me to get all the channels I watch? Some of the channels my wife and I watch are ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, ESPN, HGTV, Travel Channel, Hallmark, Hallmark movies, AMC, A&E, Bravo, etc.

I looked into Youtube TV, but they don’t have the Hallmark channels my wife watches.
I can’t get the locals over the air in my area, so any service that I have to use an antenna for is a no-go.

So, I’m not sure where to go for what I need.

The short answer is yes, if you need those specific channels, and you wish to use/view them in plex, you would need to keep cable television, get a cable card from your provider, and a tuner that can use that cable card to put the channels in plex.

Plex uses either Over the Air Antenna with a tuner, or Cable Television with a tuner… No way around it for the Live TV & DVR service.

However, you can still get plex, and organize all of your own content (if you have any) and get another streaming service online. I think Philo will have what you’re looking for channels wise…

I was afraid of that. I just want to get away from the cable companies (except internet) altogether.

I am currently using the Plex server for my media server, and have over 300 movies, and 200 songs on it. Love it!

Thanks!

Check out Suppose, https://www.suppose.tv/tv.

Select the channels you want, it lists providers, both traditional and streaming.

FWIW, I’m very happy with Playstation Vue (not listed on Suppose). It does not integrate with Plex, but it does have DVR and apps so I can also watch on my tablets and phones.

Sadly, Vue is being discontinued:

Wow! Hadn’t seen that. Thanks for the heads up.

Playstation Vue is shutting down in January, so not an option.

I have to say, that link you provided for Suppose is awesome! Save me a lot of time of comparing services based upon what I need. Also, gives me good ideas on combining services.

Thank you!!!
