I’m planning to let Plex Media Server work on a headless server (only has a Intel GPU and no physical monitors) as a Windows service (Windows Server 2016). Will the hardware acceleration of Plex work properly in this situation? Or what should I do to make it work?
No, you will only be able to use the hardware encoding, but not the hardware decoding.
There is no solution.
You can only run Plex server as a scheduled task with automatic user logon, if you want to use full hardware transcoding.
Or switch to Linux.
@OttoKerner even if you use a headless display adapter?
Yes, even then.
that’s interesting to hear since Plex claims to support Windows DXVA2 which supports hardware decode…

Yes, it supports that – in a user session. Not as system service.
