I’m using the web player on my Windows 10 PC to play the files hosted on the same PC. MP4 files play seamlessly, with no buffering or lag when skipping ahead or back. MKV files, on the other hand, do buffer and take a while to load when skipping. Sometimes it just stays buffering for the longest time, so I have to close the player and start the video up again.
I’m guessing that this is because MP4 isn’t being converted, but MKV is, from some google searching. But I can play MKV files just fine in Windows Media Player, and other media players. Is there a way to disable the conversion, or am I out of luck?
MKV is too broad a category. Without Plex XML info we cannot give you a qualified answer, why this happens.
But if you are looking for a better playback experience on a Windows desktop: download and install Plex Media Player from below. It can play many more formats than your web browser can.
Ah, sorry, I didn’t realize it was that broad. Here’s the info, I believe. I got the first part from the “Get Info” part of the web player, and the image is the XML webpage it generated. Is that the info needed?

The only difference I can see is that the anime has 10bit color information. Which triggers transcoding when attempted to play back in a web browser. While the other file will direct play.
