i wanted to give access to a couple distant relatives so they not on my home network
but i wanted to know if you can do like
www.example.com and then it shows a login screen for plex to login with a user name and password.. like how netflix works
is that something plex offers and if it does .. do you need a plexpass for that? or non plex pass users work?
That’s not how it works in plex. And it will very likely never work like this.
Here is how it goes:
- you will need a Plex Pass, because this will unlock remote streaming from your server for all people you are granting access
- all people who want to access your server need to go to plex.tv and create a user account for themselves.
- you will grant access to these user accounts. Have them tell you their Plex user names, or the email address they used to create the account. You can define what they will be able to see and what not.

There is no login screen exactly like Netflix, but guest users still go to a Plex web site and sign in. If you invited that email address to your server, after they log in, they then get access to your stuff.
Really, the main difference is that if you go to the Plex web app or any mobile app as a new user, you see offers for all their free streaming stuff… and somewhere on the screen, there is a Sign In/Sign Up button. So it’s not THAT different – there is still a login form! It just takes an extra click to see it.
A much bigger difference is that it can be hard for new users to understand and navigate the difference between Plex’s stuff and YOUR stuff.
