Does Plex recognize the TiVo file type as a media file?

I am brand new to Plex. I have numerous movie files on my NAS (QNAP). These files have a file type of TiVo, a file type created by a TiVo DVR. Does Plex recognize TiVo files as a supported media file? i believe the answer is “No” because a Plex scan results in no files being listed in the library. The answer to this question is important (to me) because there is a huge downside to converting all these files to MPEG or MP4.

Thanks …

Unless something has changed in the ~10 years since I had a TiVo device, .tivo files have DRM - they’ve been encrypted by the TiVo device. Plex won’t recognize them in that state.

There used to be tools for working with those files without transcoding them, like KMTTG. It looks like it’s “abandoned” but might still be a viable option.

Some other options it looks like:

http://tivodecode.sourceforge.net/

But the writing is on the wall it looks like. Need to get the files decoded to plain MPG files while you still can.

If these are SD recordings, you might be astonished at how bad they look on a modern TV. I’d be inclined to replace anything I cared about with a better source, if at all possible.

Well this is interesting:

  • TiVo Desktop/ Desktop Plus may work on TiVo BOLT Series UESs but is not supported; the Plex App, TiVo App for iOS, and TiVo App for Android can be used to achieve the same results.

Now I’m confused. That’s also ancient, but I wonder what the heck it was referring to.

Once upon a time, there was a Plex Plugin that could interact with a TiVo and the TiVo To Go API. Of course it needed the TiVo MAK for decryption too. That would be a strange thing for a TiVo support article to mention.

Was there something else?
