I recently upgraded my GPU to a GTX 1050 for the purposes of being able to transcode 4k video. Though I have upgraded to Plex pass, acquired a 4k trascoding GPU in the GTX 1050 and enabled the feature in the settings, it does not appear to actually use the GPU. I have seen some inference that Plex only supports hardware transcoding for Intel based CPUs. Is that correct? If so, is there any plan to include AMD processors? Please advise.
The initial offering of Hardware Transcoding, throughout the beta, emphasized Intel Quick Sync Video. At this point, Intel QSV is the primary focus. On certain OS’s, like windows or for those who know how to install the libva drivers in linux, other GPUs can be used but are not officially supported.
At this time, it’s premature to even consider AMD GPUs. AMD CPUs are , of course, supported because they are also X86 & X86_64 instruction set compatible.
