Any luck on getting this working? I’m having the same problem.
Music stored locally on my imac.
Add music to plex
Have the itunes option set
Have itunes creating a .xml file in the top directory I have plex scanning
But no sign of my playlists
Yes, I had a 100% successful outcome.
If you don’t mind, please reply with your email address so I can send you the document I put together. Keep in mind that my situation was different in that I was working with a NAS instead of a desktop but I have modified the document to work for a desktop situation. I believe it will anyway. Worst case, hopefully it will steer you in a direction that will illuminate key steps to take. It is a lengthy document to be sure but I did try to be thorough as this is a situation that is extremely frustrating for many.
There are some key steps you need to take to get this working.
I think I got it working by going to itunes (music), exporting my library to the default user/music/itunes directory instead of to the top of my music media library (which is on an external drive).
I then refreshed the plex browser tab, clicked the 3 dots next to playlists, and now saw import from itunes.
Unfortunately when I press the import from itunes I get an error: Something went wrong. Make sure the server is available and try again.
I think my document will help you as there are some key steps - in a specific order - that need to happen to make this work.
Let me know and I’ll send it along.
You could convert it to a format that is allowed here rather than word, but sure please email me at peter@galvin.info
I converted it to a PDF file. I’ll send along. Please read through it before attempting to do anything obviously.
Tried one pass and didn’t work for me. Will try starting from a clean library but not sure it will help. Thanks though.
I would start with a clean library. Also clear out the XML library path in Plex before you start a new clean library import.
Make sure you don’t have any “smart playlists” as part of your XML file.
Make sure the XML file is in the same folders as your music library.
And again, make sure you follow the steps exactly as laid out in the document.
@bubbascant - I would appreciate seeing your doc - my email address is johnspam@vrealms.com. I’m using Plex on a Synology NAS. I see in the notes in this thread about “click the 3 dots next to playlists”, however on my Plex server this only shows me Unpin
, and no import option.
I’m running Plex version 1.25.3.5409
.
I have sent you the document in PDF form to your email address. Good luck!
Thank you @bubbascant.
I was able to get my import to work. The issues I had to address:
- I hadn’t specified the XML file for Plex to use.
- I needed to use
sed
to fix up the path differences in the XML file between my Mac’s storage and my NAS storage. - I hadn’t restarted the clients I was using - after restarting them, the “import from itunes” menu item appeared in the three-dots menu. The implication being that something was cached in them, and restarting the app cleared the cache so the app was able to see what it needed to present the “import from iTunes” option in the triple dot button.
All of my star ratings are now nicely imported in to Plex.
From one music lover to another, I’m so glad I was able to help, and thrilled that your playlists and ratings are now showing up!
@bubbascant if you would be so kind, could you please share the document with me as well, as I am also struggling with this precise issue! mistrestina at gmail.com.
I am using PMS version 1.25.5.5492 and iTunes version 12.12.2.2 on a Windows 10 device.
Thank you most gratefully in advance!
I’m most happy to help. What is your email? I’ll send you the document.
@bubbascant thank you! mistresina at gmail.com
@bubbascant , can you send it to me too? jwhandy at uwalumni.com. TkS!
Is your library on Windows or a NAS?
I’ll be happy to send the appropriate document if you’ll provide me with your email.
@bubbascant , I would also love instructions at kohnworkshop at gmail.com.
Thank you
I’m also curious if there’s any solution to this. I want to permanently move all my music to Plex, but as part of that I want to import all my iTunes playlists. I cannot get this function to work.
Currently I’ve “Enable iTunes plugin” and I’ve specified the iTunes library XML path. But when I go to playlists, there is no “Import iTunes playlists” under the buttons. I have restarted the server.
I have recreated the XML through iTunes multiple times. I have copy/pasted it to multiple folders and tried that.
My music folder for Plex (and iTunes) is E:\Music. iTunes puts its XML in: “E:\Music\iTunes\iTunes Music Library.xml”
I have also copied the XML into “E:\Music\iTunes Music Library.xml”
I have tried moving the XML to other folders, no luck.
Are you on a PC or MAC? Your music resides on your PC and not on a NAS? I have some very thorough instructions as to how I got it working. Reading your short post, I’m guessing that the sequence of how you did things is likely part of the issue. In my document, you’ll find the contents of how to properly do this. Further, your XML file may need to be modified (or just checked to make sure). This is more the case when putting music on a NAS as I’ve done. Can you please send me your email address and I’ll send it out to you.
