Dolby Atmos support for LG TV apps (WebOS 4.5)?

Hi guys

wanted to know if any Dolby Atmos support will be added in an upcoming update of Plex app on LG’s WebOS 4.5 (for 2019’s TVs) ?

Thanks !

smart tvs will not support the HD audio (TRUEHD+ATMOS) that comes with 4k blruray rips.

even if both your tv AND receiver support E-ARC, there is no guarantee that it will work with apps such as plex.

the atmos that comes from netflix etc is DOLBY DIGITAL+ATMOS.

absolutely but as I have many rips on my server with True HD Atmos tracks I was wondering if someday I could read them from my TV directly…or if I should consider buying the new Nvidia Shield TV to enjoy that !

the shield is the only mainstream device that supports truehd+atmos.

do note you also must have an atmos compatible receiver.

yes I have ! thanks for the info, I’ll then get the Shield

Well according to rtings.com for the Lg Oled 9 series, Dolby Atmos via TrueHD via eARC : Yes

Nice.

still need EARC receiver and compatible hdmi cable.

Also, EARC support alone, does not mean it includes ‘app’ support.

True. My receiver is eARC capable but my TV, the Lg c8 is not.

I’ve said this many times, but never hurts to repeat;

smart tvs and most streaming devices are designed for STREAMING, from netflix and other streaming providers.

they are (generally) NOT designed to play high bitrate 4k bluray rips with HD audio via plex.

frankly it is a miracle that plex works as well as it does on the devices we have, and even moreso that we have a device like the shield that actually does work well enough with full 4k bluray rips.

Plex, 4k, transcoding, and you

so guys just to sum up what TeknoJunky is trying to tell you :

  • yes recent LG TV support True HD Atmos audio (it can passthrough it)
  • LG TV from 2019 have eARC while previous model don’t
  • Plex app on LG TV does NOT support True HD Atmos
  • Plex app on Nvidia Shield TV does support True HD Atmos Audio

So if you want to enjoy your 4K bluray rips with True HD Atmos audio, you need :

  • Nvidia Shield with Plex on it
  • Connected directly to your Atmos capable AV receiver OR to your Atmos capable TV and then sending back audio to Atmos capable AV receiver ONLY IF both TV and receiver support eARC.

Remember that ARC is only capable of DD+ Atmos so Dolby Digital Plus Atmos but NOT Dolby True HD Atmos which require a much higher bitrate than ARC is capable of, that’s why eARC is needed for that.

Does that mean that a LG TV 2019 (C9) with an eARC Receiver, will not be able to stream lossless audio (DTS HD / TrueHD) via Plex?

Not talking about Atmos. Just DTS HD MA and TrueHD.

So for example if I play a 4K movie from Plex WebOS (from my nas) and stream it to tv. Will it play the 4K movie with lossless audio on my av receiver ?

Well I’m not sure but I think yes the Plex app on LG TV 2019 does decode true HD, at least on my Plex on this 2019 LG TV, the True HD well appear on Plex but not Atmos.

Do you have any dispaly on your receiver (or companion app) to inform you of the current audio format being decoded ? if yes it should say Dolby True HD

I do not think it is plex fault that truehd/atmos does not work over e-arc.

I SUSPECT that E-ARC is designed only for direct HDMI truehd/atmos to passthrough. IE a 4k bluray player > tv > receiver.

I have not see any confirmation that any tv software/app has been able to pass through truehd/atmos.

I suspect that either, TV manufacturers either specifically do not want apps to pass truehd/audio over e-arc (they want you to use pay streaming services), or that that e-arc was never intended for software to pass through e-arc.
