Dolby vision not playing in regular or preview app

I’m not getting any Dolby Vision data for streams on my Vizio TV. It doesn’t matter if I play it from Chromecast or the tv’s app. I just get HDR. HRD10+ data also comes through fine.

The only cause I can think of is that it’s direct streaming the video, cause the audio is being transcoded. Could that be the cause?

My subtitles are SRT files that are in the MKV. However, I still dont’ get Dolby Vision regaurdless of if they are on or off.

Same Here. Tested Chromcast 2020 (should support single layer DV), FireTV 4K (single layer DV), and Vizio P Series Quantum X (should support all DV). All DV content comes up as HDR10.

Tested with both single layer and dual layer DV files. Content is being direct streamed both video and audio.

Same content works fine on LG Oled C9.

I think it’s highly likely that if it’s going to work, it’s only going to work via direct play. Also, just because the TV is DolbyVision capable, that doesn’t necessarily mean that apps will be able to play DolbyVision content - it’s possible that it’s only relevant for HDMI connected devices such as a blu-ray player.

I downloaded the content locally to test further. Will report back with the results of that.

One is a *.ts file. DVHE.04.06.
The other is a MKV file. Don’t know the dvhe (I think 07.06, will check).

I’ll also find out what the codecs are within the containers.

Well I’ve learned that Dolby Vision is incredibly frustrating. I used the Dolby test files from here: https://developer.dolby.com/tools-media/sample-media/video-streams/dolby-vision-streams/ Along with personal content and saw the following results:

DV Profile P65QX USB Plex Vizio Plex FireTV4k Plex Chromecast 2020
4 (Enhancement Layer) Unknown No No No
5 Yes No Yes No (Transcode)
7 (Enhancement Layer) Unknown No No No
8 Yes No (HDR10) Yes No (Transcode)

Notes:

  1. My assumption about the files being single layer was wrong. Profiles 4 and 7 use enhancement layers. No streaming devices support these.
  2. I was unable to test Profile 4 and 7 locally on the TV as my files were too big for the FAT32 usb required. I assume they are supported though since this is what Bluray uses.

There is technically an issue with the Plex app for Vizio TV.

I guess ultimately, the_gr8_brandino, can you download mediainfo, open the file, view html and find out what the DV profile is for your issue?

Media info says this, and it’s the same for any Dolby Vision file I have:
Dolby Vision, Version 1.0, dvhe.07.06,BL+EL+RPU, Blu-ray compatible/SMPTE ST 2086, HRD10 compatible

Try NTFS format for your USB stick. Although manual says only FAT32 is supported my Vizio OLED recognizes NTFS formatted USB drives just fine. I bet yours will do the same since both TVs use the same firmware as far as I know…

What works over USB and what works via HDMI is not necessarily an indication of what works via streaming apps. Plex is unlike other apps in that it plays random user supplied content, whereas apps like Netflix, etc have content that is encoded specifically to be compatible for streaming. Because of this, the TV manufacturers don’t necessarily put any effort into supporting streaming anything outside the expected norms.

This thread @ What's the status of Dolby Vision + Atmos on Plex? (re: LG WebOS, Nvidia Shield, Apple TV) has some great DV discussion and info.
