Dolby Vision not working on 7.24 with single layer mp4 files

no logs = no way for anyone to help

Yep, single layer DV working for me now. Was having some issues with the video stuttering but will need to test more.

Here are server and client logs. First video, venom is single layer DV, plays back as HDR10. Second video, atomic blonde, is dual layer and plays back as hdr10. Third video, black panther, is single layer DV and plays back as hdr10. But Black panther stutters badly. No others do. Archive.zip (6.4 MB)

Just out of curiosity, why does Plex need an app update to support Dolby Vision on the new Shield 2019? I thought as long as Plex does not trancode anything it, the shield could decode it and pass it to the TV. What needed to change in Plex?

We need to detect the video stream is Dolby Vision and use the Dolby Vision decoder, if not we will end up using the HEVC decoder (since thats the video’s stream format).

We need the client side logs to look into the issue, details about fetching the logs are available here: https://support.plex.tv/articles/201573117-android-android-tv-fire-tv-logs/

I see. Thanks for the info.

I included both client and server logs in my zip.

Is There a possibility to convert dual-layer (MP4) dolby vision muxes to single DV?
This would be a possibility to get them run on Plex, wouldn’t be so?

what did you mean by Dual Layer BluRay? how do you play it and what are you actually playing? whole blurays cannot be played by plex afaik and dual-layer mp4 and m2ts don’t work.

Is that why dual-layer mp4’s only play with HDR10 because the dv decoder is not being used. Is there a way for you to use the dv decoder when it detects two video streams? Does the decoder even work for dual-layer? If it does and it’s as simple as telling the client to use that decoder for the latter scenario then by all means do it.

also, does HD lossles sound (i.e. DTS:X or LPCM) actually work with DV in plex?

I think @sixones meant that dual layer will play but ignore the 2nd DV layer, so you simply get HDR.
Only some LG’s and Sony TV’s will read the DV layer in Plex.

Actually if you force direct play on a RokuTv that supports Dolby Vision it will play but only with profile 4. I get the Dolby Vision flag pop up on my TV.

Also the LG demo provided by the plex employee, has some issues on 7.24.0.13291.

Sometimes the video starts just fine and plays and the tv shows the dolby vision popup. Other times i’m kicked back to home in plex or even kicked all the way to the shield home screen as though plex had crashed. i also can’t seem to figure out the pattern either.

I have other single layer dv files that start to play the crash part of the way through.

Here are the logs after several crashes from my shield.

I have a Sony XE9305 and with the new Shield TV Pro DV dont work. I have test the Video sample from above and the sea is green.

Check if you have an update on your TV, Dolby Vision was added to the XE93 / XE94 series via a firmware update. If your up to date, send me logs from the Plex app, it should tell us why Dolby Vision isn’t working. Details on fetching the logs can be found here; https://support.plex.tv/articles/201573117-android-android-tv-fire-tv-logs/

Thanks for the logs, we are looking into the crashes!

There is an issue with DV and the color space fix for the shield pro where the Sony tv sees the dolby vision signal, but doesn’t switch to the correct color space. One has to go in and set the color space manually on the TVs hdmi port. I have the Sony xbr 900f. Nvidia is aware of this issue and have reproduced it.
