So I ran the basic troubleshooting guides and I realized I’m stuck with double NAT issue. I’ve even tried getting a static IP and dynamic. Tried uPnP and manual port forwarding for each, I still have no joy. Very strangely the REMOTE ACCESS on the plex server page on local network shows AVAILABLE and then after a few seconds goes NOT ACCESSIBLE after a few minutes. Anytime I try to access the server through another network it shows UNAVAILABLE or INDIRECT.
Could someone help me on what to tell the ISP because he’s also not able to understand the problem. I have showed him multiple times that none of my ports are “open” despite manually forwarding them and he acknowledges it as well.
I have 0 idea on how ISP deal with routing at their end and I don’t think he’s very savvy with tech.
I have no issues on the server locally so I don’t think there is a problem with configuration at my end.
This is just the way Plex checks for connectivity that makes it seems like it works very shortly.
The only way forward is to get a line that is not behind double NAT - Plex won’t work behind double NAT. If your ISP are having any troble understanding why double NAT is a problem for you, I would find another ISP ASAP ![]()
Please provide some additional information on your network.
What equipment does the ISP provide at your place - modem, router, etc?
Do you have another router, mesh system, etc connected to the ISP equipment? If so, make and model please.
Where and how is your Plex server connected to your network?
See the Common Problems section of the Troubleshooting Remote Access guide.
Double NAT usually happens when the ISP equipment is performing NAT and you have a second router also performing NAT: ISP router → your router → Plex Server
The usual fix is to have the ISP place their equipment into bridge mode (instead of router mode). This eliminates one of the NAT functions and allows Plex remote access to function correctly.
That written, every situation is different, so the additional information about your network is needed.
Apparently the ISP had the IP I got “BLACKLISTED” for ports and uPnP. Since I don’t use any other service as such, coz of the virus I’m stuck at home. The ISP gave me a new ISP and viola it worked. Maybe he was just being lazy, not sure. But now it’s working like a rockstar. Thanks again for the quick responses
Just to answer you as well, the ISP runs an optical cable to my house connected to the distribution box and LAN cable to AC3000 orbi.
The server is connected wired to one of the satellite (in the den) far away from the orbi router. Today I even asked him to let me run the orbi in the AP mode and I’d use his IP to use plex. He got rattled. LoL.
Just a curious thing, is that possible and if so, how secure are my devices from being “snooped” on?
It sounds like whatever your ISP did eliminated the double NAT scenario. Also that the distribution box is not functioning as a router.
If the Orbi is the only router in the network, then there is no need to run it in AP mode. Doing so would be detrimental, interrupting your Internet access. Were it to work, it would be like putting your system directly on the Internet, which would not be good from a security point of view.
I agree, but I was guessing the ISP was using a router to distribute IPs to multiple people, but again, I really don’t trust their security.
Anyways all is well that ends well. Thanks a lot again for your help and replies
