Downgrade to old iOS Version and turn off updates only for Plex - Howto! - no jailbreak required

your device doesnt need to be connected during the itunes part because you dont use itunes to transfer the file to your device, only connect your device when using the app manager.

delete itunes and reinstall the old version and you might need to do this part

  • If you get an error about Library.itl when opening iTunes: Go to C:\Users\Username\My Music\iTunes\ and delete the existing Library.itl.

Thank you for that. I couldn’t find anywhere to search for Apps. It was all Music stuff.
Finally, in the pull-down menu in the top left, I had to select ‘Edit Menu’ and add Apps before I could search and manage apps.

thanks Legaian, what do you mean by “properly executed the breakpoint in Charles” do you mean hit the execute button twice?
EDIT, got it downloading now execute twice,

thanks to Keksnet too for the tip + Becki for starting the thread.

anyone seen a thread that we can monitor for so we can know when the new app is finally “ready” ?

this is the update thread for it

is this seems like the main feedback thread atm

I keep getting this error message when trying to download - anyone else getting the 1008 error?

I would try restarting your computer after a few hours and try it again - someone mentioned they had to restart iTunes for one of the parts to work. As you saw in my post, I don’t know why mine worked finally besides time.

Thanks - yeah I eventually got it to grab the older version later in the day.

What does downgrading do for downloaded shows that got “migrated”? Do they stay, or will we have to re-download?

Chiming in to say I have also had to downgrade the app because casting to Chromecast was unusable for me on the new app (always transcoding and subtitles not working). Shame that this is what we need to do to keep using the Plex app.

Thank you @jhnmdahl for the instructions to prevent updates on Windows, I’ve followed them succesfully after the Github guide.

Dear Plex,

Look at the hassle your users are willing to go through to avoid using your new “Experience.”

When people are willing to stand up VMs and sideload old versions of the iOS app, it should signal that there is a severe problem in your requirements-gathering process.

“We hear you”-style blog posts isn’t really the right path to success here. You have to come out and say:

“Community, we ****ed up royally on this one. We are replacing this abortion of an app with the last working package on the App Store, which will be pushed to your devices as an “upgrade.” The new experience will be parked in TestFlight where we will continue to solicit your feedback and bug reports. We are sorry. Please forgive us.”

I think that the community would actually receive this well. So few companies actually come out and own their mistakes. So you have two paths you can travel down here:

Path 1, basically continue on your way with condescending posts from your outreach team while refusing to hear your invested user base.

Path 2, come clean and reset the relationship, showing your invested users that you actually hear them and own the fact that this redesign has been a massive failure.

I ask you to please take the road less traveled

Did you find out what happens to migrated downloads?

100%.

I don’t see any other way this can be rectified. However, even if they took this approach they must be aware that a lot of damage has been done and that trust from their user community will be dented for some time. It has, to put it bluntly, been an unmitigated disaster.

As a side note, (and one which I found both amusing and interesting) is that Google AI now provides an overview of the current New experience release if you enter “Plex disaster” into their search engine.

Okay, I can answer this now that I’ve done the downgrade, since you need to delete the old app for it to work, nothing happens, it gets deleted.

I am having the same problem, I have the old version 8.45 downloaded to the iTunes v12.6.5.3 but can’t get my iPad to connect to the old iTunes.
I can’t see anyone discussing this, there must be a solution…….PLEASE……….have spent several hours getting old Windows machine out of storage and I can see the finish line but it is out of reach with everything I’ve tried.

you dont use itunes to transfer the file, you use the app manager program

look at step 5.1 here
GitHub - qnblackcat/How-to-Downgrade-apps-on-AppStore-with-iTunes-and-Charles-Proxy

also make sure to delete plex off your ipad first then transfer otherwise it wont work

I’m also a lifetime plex pass user and incredibly disappointed with this app update.

  • casting to chromecast does not work consistently
  • downloading to my iphone does not work at all
  • user interface is not intuitive and from the home page is difficult to find the basic browse functions
  • seems like updated interface is intended to push ‘discover’ and other non-personal streaming options

I didn’t want to go all the way down the road of installing a windows VM and iTunes, so I just restored a backup from January 2025.

This didn’t work…

I don’t understand this at all. What do you mean extract the old plex ipa. Am i working on a Mac now to find something that supposedly has been Archived. I only connect my ios devices to one of my Macs at night and to my knowledge they are NOT backed up. I use the connection to transfer photos and videos from my IOS devices.

There is nothing under the Archive Utility app.

And even if I had used Archive somehow, I got NO notice that Plex was changing. It just DID and now I can’t use it at all without tons of bugs.

Besides thousands of pieces of music that I have owned and ripped into the Plex and over a thousand MP4 Movies, I have about ½ million photos and videos that I have taken and/or created over 65 years of being a photographer and I cannot get to easily based on these terrible changes to the app. There is NOT easy method now to plan/separate and share at any given moment.

Can anyone help me? I REALLY want the old app back. It had some issues, but it was FAR better then this.

Thank you @ReaperSPTN2109, I was using an old windows machine with a small low res monitor and didn’t see the “expand” buttons on the left.
On closer look and read all fixed now and back on the old app and one very happy user now.
HOWEVER…I have just seen another update from Plex 2025.15.0 has anybody been game to download and see if there has been any improvement over this mess they created?
I am sticking with the old 8.45 version for now until…?

There is a procedure to download the old version and restore it to your device, it is further back in this thread along with the IPA version number. It does require a windows PC and downloading “Charles Proxy”.

Make sure you follow the instructions, I was inpatient and just followed the diagrams the first time or two until I slowed down and actually read through the whole thing and once I had the file I just moved to my Mac and Airdropped it to my iPad.
The build number you need to substitute in the procedure for Plex is 871812101 which is for version 8.45.
Read through some of the earlier post in this thread and good luck.
