4 years… still nothing.
Hey guys, looks like they increased the limit up to 72h (at least for the normal playlists), which is a step in the right direction, but still far from the optimal solution.
It’s a step in the right direction, but I won’t be moving over from iTunes until these limits are banished. I have a large music library and large playlists and I don’t feel like carrying around some random selection of it.
I would hope that this would also populate smartplaylists with items that were downloaded for offline use.
Is this issue still relevant? Personally I have a 3 days downlaoded playlist. Never been limited by this feature.
For me, it still is. While not as big as some other people here, my longest playlist is around 7 days. I have “mood” playlists where I combine songs from smaller playlists. A 3-day limitation wouldn’t be a problem for me if I could at least add another playlist to the queue and shuffle all these songs. This becomes annoying when I want to start listening to specific songs that are outside of this 3-day download limit.
I think Plexamp was designed for listening to entire albums, not really genres or entire library on shuffle. This is different from what I got used to by using other streaming apps (e.g., Spotify).
Anyone who is a dance instructor knows that this 72hr limit is a problem. There are many instances where you cant be relying on an internet connection with 50 kids waiting.
I want to migrate from Apple music. My longest playlist is 38.7 days. Probably half of my 50 or so playlists are longer than 72 hours. I want all my music available on a plane or anywhere else as I travel a lot. So yes, 72 hours is a dealbreaker for me.
+1 Here - Major hangup for me.
72 Hr. appears to be the current limit - up from 24 but still not enough.
I love so much of what PlexAmp has except this one missing feature. And now with the trend of more DAPs using android, I am surprised hasn’t come to pass. Voted and hope many others do.
We are now a third of the way through 2025, making it several years since this has been requested. People travel to places where they are roaming or have no service at all. Some people don’t want to or can’t use their data for steaming their music due to cost or data caps. Most flagship smartphones can have up to 1 terabyte of storage. All of the streaming competitors have this ability, and have had it for years. There has even been a demonstrated ability by the dev team to modify this, as evidenced by the change from 24 hours to 72…
And yet the limitation STILL exists.
Someone, for the love of all things good in this world, please make this make sense.
Really really really needed!!
No tracks quantity or 72h or any time or space ■■■■■■■ limit!!
I’m going crazy since Plex removed the “sync” function!!
I don’t give a f..k to TV shows or movies. I just got a Lifetime Plexpass years ago only for music download for offline listening and now it’s gone!!
First they changed Sync to Download (that didn’t work so well for huge libraries - you have to make a fake playlist that’s your whole music, can’t download the library anymore). And now also the “Download” feature is gone!!!
Plexamp is very nice…but is missing a mandatory function!!
Want my download feature back and working with no limits!!!
C’mon, lift this dam restriction already. If dev’s are saying its a performance issue, then its a skill issue. Local SQL Lite DB to index downloaded songs, a quick lookup before a song plays or when the previous song is about to end. What performance issues are there??? Cache, cant be that…
From all the forums I have come across, sounds more like the single dev that started plex amp has his own ideas of what the app should be, rather than listening to what the customer wants. At least be honest, because performance limitations sounds like a bunch of doo doo.
Sounds like you should build your own app b/c you clearly know more than the devs ![]()
You come on here just to say that, cute ![]()
It always sounds simple until you get into it. Try it with 20k or 30k tracks and it’s a completely different problem to doing the same with 400 songs.
I’m sure that if the devs could easily have lifted the restriction they would have.
The other thing is that Plex offer a product, they have a view what the product should be. If customer wants are different, the PlexAmp product owner has to decide whether to move to where the customer wants the product to be, or to stay with their vision. It’s their choice.
Now of course the result of not listening to your customers (like that’s ever happened to Plex
) is that you could lose customers, but again it’s the Product owner’s choice.
I’d try the Prism App on IOS if you want lots of songs held locally.
Touche haha. You are 100% right.
I would say though, that we need users who are willing to come on the forums and nag. Otherwise how else would they know if a percentage of their use base wants this.
Would have to disagree with the technical side of things though. I am a software developer, and Im not saying to take my word for it, but this is pretty simple stuff. You dont need to be a dev to understand, just think of it this way. When you click a song, it has to do some kind of lookup right, that already exists, weather it is on the server or locally first… All you are doing is a pre-check if the song is marked as downloaded in the cache data, and if so then bypass server. If it was a limitation, it would be a limitation on all local music players, iTunes etc. But it just isn’t. As for the process of downloading, this is simple asynchronous work that can be done in the background over time; while you listen to music.
I thought about it, and the only thing I can think of is that it would make paying for the Plex Pass less of a necessity. A user could start the download of their entire library at home, then they would not need remote connection outside of home, thus not needing the purchase of Plex Pass. ![]()

Which I someone respect as a business decision, but as I am a Plex Pass subscriber, I am not winning here…
Yea, I will give Prism another go. Just not that good with CarPlay, missing a bunch of featuer for selecting music and not all my playlists show up. I should give it another go ![]()
You do realize that you can’t download without a Plex Pass right? So, your random shower thought isn’t a possibility.
Also, since your not a developer at Plex you don’t really know the ins and outs of the decisions being made regarding anything so it might not be as “simple” as you claim it should be. In many posts Elan has explained that there is a purpose to the download limit and they have expanded it, but clearly they are going for a specific experience which is why there is a limit still.
If you want to download your whole music library then there are lots of apps that can handle that already.
It’s great to see you so passionate. Though I wonder if it could be done without being as negative and condescending to a fellow community member.
I did not realize you need the pass to even have downloads enabled in the first place. Thanks for clarifying that, snark and all.
In regards to the dev aspect, this is responded to in poor form. And Plex employee or not, this is nothing revolutionary. Without any good reason, I don’t see how this could be a limitation, and there is nothing wrong with me jumping on this thread and voicing this opinion… Why not instead try and educate with a useful link/ref so people on this forum can discover it. Unless people see a clear response as to why, and it is believable, people can and will make assumptions.
I would love to get some helpful feedback from you, remember this thread was made by people who would like to see a feature implemented. There is no need to come on here and put down people feedback because you disagree, its very poor taste.
