Hi, I was wondering if is it possible to allow friends to download the file of a media? As admin I can see the download file button in the drop down menu from a content. But that same menu is not present from a friend view. Do I need a plex premium do allow the download of a file? Do I and my friend both need the premium account?
It is not clear to me how if does work.

Thanks for your reply. I have examined your links and it is still not clear to me…
Especially from the download-sync-faq, I see in the “Is a Plex Pass subscription needed to use Downloads?” explanation a chart to determine if a user can use the download or not, but imediatly after there is the " Can Managed Users use Downloads?" explanation where it states the only the admin need the premium subscription. It seems that the second explanation is partially in conflict with the first one.
In addition it is not clear to me if those downloads are releted to get the file in the plex app or to the download the file localy.
Can you help me understanding this thing?

When logged in as an admin, you can use the triple dot menu on an item (in a web browser) to download the actual file itself to your computer. Only admin account is allowed to do this. I suppose you could let your friend log into your account itself (NOT RECOMMENDED) to do this. Managed users and invited friends do not have this capability.
Alternatively, the mobile apps (iOS, Android) let you download into the local apps storage temporarilly, mostly for offline usage. This feature requires a Plex Pass on the downloaders account. As invited friends, they would be the ones that need the pass, not you. The mobile apps themselves need to be unlocked with a one-time purchase or having a Plex Pass, but a Pass is needed for mobile downloads, so that covers the app unlock already.
If you have a plex pass but not your friends, the other way to allow them to download would be to invite the friend into the home itself. This is almost as dangerous as giving them your account login though, as it is insanely simple to swap from their accounts to yours without a login, so this is also not recommended.

Download File is an admin action that only the admin of the server can do from the web app. regardless if they have a Plex Pass or not.
Downloads is a Plex Pass feature. Downloads is supported in the Desktop ( Mac/Win/Linux jurtt called “Plex”), iOS, and Android mobile apps. The user of those apps needs the Plex Pass not the server owner. Downloads does things like monitor the downloads, auto download the next episodes after you watch the ones previously downloaded, and keeps track of the watch state when it syncs up with server
