I have subscribed to a Plex Pass today and have invited a new existing user to Plex Home. This user has accepted the invite and has now access to my libraries as expected.
My issue:
Downloads are enabled for this user, but are not available in the menus. The user can’t download files.
Could someone help me out fixing this issue? Thanks in advance!
Plex Web does not have the Download function. They need to use Plex for Windows/Mac/Linux. You see it using Plex Web as an admin feature. Only your admin account can do this.
This was not my understanding of this callout on the Downloads Overview support page after a few reads. I was sure it would be ok and signed up for the Plex Pass.
But now that I read it for the fifth time, I understand that this user won’t be able to download as it is not a Managed User.
I’d like to share that it has been quite complex to understand. Hopefully in this specific situation it is ok to have a Managed User for this user, but otherwise I may have signed up for a lifetime Plex Pass for no use.
Do you mean that a full free account in a Plex Home is considered just the shared user in this regard? Cause I’ve read some contradictory info on this before:
I am interested in this subject cause I’m a Plex server admin with a Plex Pass, and I have been using a managed account for myself for a while, cause I need all my sources pinned for management and only a few pinned just for me, and I also don’t want test playbacks on my personal account history. Using a managed account worked mostly fine for me, especially when skip intro was not available for full accounts in a Home. I also use another managed user just for couple-watching with my partner with another set of pinned sources.
Then new features started to appear, that are not fully compatible with the managed users concept, like Discover, Universal Watchlist, maybe something else. I started considering to create new full accounts instead of the managed ones (maybe even copying the db data to them).
I was relieved when I read in the reply above that I will be able to use Downloads on a new full account while I’m in a Plex Home. Turns out it doesn’t seem the case anymore? Is there any chance account conversion from managed to full will be offered in the future and could features like Downloads be grandfathered in such a case?
And, most importantly, is there anything else that I will lose by moving out from my managed account to a newly created full account for Plex Home?
By any chance, is there some sort of table listing all the paid features with columns like server owner/managed user/full account in home/full account with just sharing, and info on who have to own Plex Pass for said feature (with asterisk for client features that strictly depend on the host settings)? Because I’d say, with all the new and upcoming features, we desperately in need of one. I opened a lot of Plex Pass feature articles and most do not explicitly mention it, don’t go into all the details, or say it only in a related article. So I’m not sure where else could I get the full picture.
Also, maybe Plex team is already thinking in the direction of more strictly dividing server/library/metadata management from personal watching somehow? It would solve my (and I’m sure many others) issues if I would be able to simply use my own ~8 years old account to watch Plex.
