Download Location in New Windows App

Creating a Sym Link is a bit of a faff, but it does work (even though “normal” users shouldn’t have to do something like this)

how is there no way to even select a different folder location?
It’s putting it on my small boot disk and not my huge data drive on my laptop… I have the data drive specifically for this crap…

Guess i’ll just download them from my NAS and play them in VLC?

Correct but you can create symlink.

I’ve had Plex (and paid for Plex Pass for YEARS) so I have the right to say…

THIS IS A BUNCH OF CRAP. Plex is basically telling me I need to sell my $1,500 Surface tablet that I use for watching MY downloaded media because my boot drive not being large enough for my downloads and buy a larger boot drive. What!? Not only that, but an even bigger slap in the face because they don’t still offer a way to download the old version.

Seriously.

Plex really upset me with the first few updates the past couple of years in losing all my “On Deck” info and having to upgrade all the new players to support the new version of server, but this is an entire new low. For a while I was trying out Emby because no one at Plex could explain to me why some files didn’t have sound - to which later I found out Windows development went down the tubes and Plex didn’t support the codecs because it relied on the outdated Windows Media player.

I’m pretty sure you can’t just take away features that people paid for and expect to keep a user base.

I’ll GLADLY insert my foot in mouth and profusely apologize for my bold complaint here, but I’ve been looking all afternoon on my day off to frantically find a solution to this before all of my flights next week - and have found NOTHING yet…

Where are the directions for this? Why is it not right in the app itself for people who rely on this?

Create a symbolic link from %LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex\Plex Media Server\Sync\ to your desired storage location.

If you’re unsure how to do this, read this: https://www.maketecheasier.com/create-symbolic-links-windows10/

No. But dear Lord this is a maybe oversight that needs to quickly be addressed. I’m with you, brother.

Totally agree that this isn’t ideal. I’m working to muster our forces.

Continuing the discussion from Download Location in New Windows App:

One work around I am using until this is updated, is going to the download directory < root >\Users<username>\AppData\Local\Plex\Plex Media Server\Sync\1\3 and moving the movies to my external drive

That would have been a much better response initially than your boorish “not important to me” comment.
Extremely poor customer relations to the people that pay for the application you’re representing.

I’m in the military where our primary duty is generally the opposite of being nice, and even we would be quickly removed from public engagement with a response such as yours.
I have only influenced ~10 people to use Plex in the years I have, but I will definitely recommend those that are paying for it monthly to strongly reconsider continuing support if that is how you represent the Plex employed community.

Just amazing.

You’ve taken that sentiment entirely out of context which was in response to a generic statement about Plex removing necessary features. The rest of his response to this specific request is as follows:

I appreciate your position and comment.
The rest of his initial post would be much better received if the initial snide portion was left out.

If you can’t see why that response to your customers’ concerns and questions is wrong, then my original point is even more strong in position. Given you’re still insisting on defending the original post and telling me and others that we’re in the wrong for our concerns, it’s fairly clear y’all just don’t get it.

I love Plex. It’s the most convenient, universal way for my non tech-savvy family to consume my media. I’ve purchased seven lifetime licenses personally for family members.

But seriously - the attitude displayed that the customers that STARTED with you as an Xbox and HTPC platform and their concerns don’t matter is concerning.

Note I said attitude “displayed.” It may not be Plex’s actual position. But it’s what your team is outwardly presenting.

I posted the original “generic comment” about the removal of features. It was a very snide reply to a paying customer. My only real point was that I bought a lifetime license based on certain features sets, some of which were removed.

I think the issue people are trying to bring forward, is that the acceptance by Plex of that type of reply, is representative of the attitude problem from Plex in general.

I love Plex, but I have no longer have any confidence that any feature that makes me love it will remain in future baselines. The reduction in features has made me less likely to use other new features, that could easily be removed later. For example, I wont consider using Plex for my podcasts, because if only a few use it, it will be removed as unnecessary.

It has now been 2 1/2 months since the release. Is there any movement on transcoding and download locations in this app?

ps I still use the old app that has been hidden in the windows store.

This works great! Thanks rodalphoid. A ‘hard’ symbolic link is the workaround until this absolutely critical feature is added to the app.
On Surface GO (or any windows I presume) the following will work (Replace “USER” with your username.
STEP 1: Move folder “Sync” located at “C:\users\USER\AppData\Local\Plex\Plex Media Server\Sync” to your desired location, e.g. “D:\PlexSyncContent\sync”
STEP 2: open command prompt (administrator)
STEP 3: mklink /J “C:\users\USER\AppData\Local\Plex\Plex Media Server\Sync” “D:\PlexSyncContent\Sync”

That isn’t a solution for now though. At the moment the lack of transcoding is making me ponder whether it’s worth continuing persevering with Plex. A nebulous “future” as the timeline isn’t going to make me stick with it. I really expected such basic functionality would be in the first update but the fact that Plex hasn’t even managed to implement something as basic as an option to choose the download folder doesn’t make me think that updates will be quick.

Hey, if Plex isn’t working out for you, I totally agree you should go with whatever gives you what you need. If you can’t wait, you can’t wait.

Hey guys, I bought the lifetime pass a few months ago hoping to get a premium sync feature in the windows desktop app as well (I knew it was there in the previous microsoft store app).
Any forecast when sync+choose location features will be brought back?

So … it’s 3.5 months later and Plex for Windows is still missing key features from the old App Store player. “Coming soon” needs some firm dates please!

We still:

  • can’t set download location (workaround above is noted but shouldn’t be necessary!)
  • can’t transcode before download.
  • can’t choose custom number of unwatched episodes to sync

I have no idea why something that wasn’t broken was “fixed”. The android version is more feature rich than the Windows version now!

I stupidly deleted the old App Store version, is there a way to install it again?
