Download Location in New Windows App

I downloaded the new app to replace the Microsoft Store version on my Surface Pro.
Besides the obvious issues with lack of being touch friendly, the biggest issue so far is, I want to download to my SD card not to my drive. I often download large amounts for travel, which is why I have the SD card. I cannot find a setting to change the download location in the new app, am I missing it?

No, there is no setting for that.

Sadly, Plex is quickly shedding away its usefulness, as it drops necessary features.

Add my vote that this is a feature that is definitely needed. I have a Surface Go and it would definitely be preferable to be able to drop the downloads onto the SD card instead of the C: drive.

I also hope the option to transcode to a lower quality setting eventually is added. It doesn’t make a lot of sense to take up space with the original quality downloads when playing on a small device that doesn’t need that kind of resolution.

Agree to disagree. Necessary to “you” is not equal to necessary to “me”.

Regardless, changing the location for download storage is an entirely reasonable assumption. This and transcoding before download are coming together in the future.

I hope it comes together quickly in the future. As a paying user, that payment was made based on the feature set that was present at the time of purchase. Removing support for the Microsoft Store App too early feels like the mistake made here. Please consider bringing the Microsoft Store App back until some of the beta issues can be worked out.

You should be able to make a hard link (directory junction, in Windows terms) to your SDcard. Hacky solution, but it ought to work.

This will work on MacOS and Linux also, with different syntax.

Really - an employee with such a condescending response…“necessary to you”…you are an employee, you have no rights to agree/disagree !!!

Download location is important to probably 90% of [dare I say it] Windows mobile users (i.e. laptop) and you didn’t bother to include at launch. Pretty poor. Don’t get me started on the faff to get screen size sorted.

Plex / Elan - you really have forgotten about your customers who pay for this service. I was really hoping that this new app would be good but it’s terrible - this is not even an Alpha app and should never have been released. Perhaps it’s finally time to realise my Plexpass was a mistake and look at Emby instead.

This is a critical feature, most portable tablets have limited internal storage, so we would like to move the files to SD Card. Consider the main SKUs, Surface Go, Surface Pro, Lenovo, etc. hybrid 2in1 tablets. Great for travel, great screens and touch screen.

Can we take a look at adding in a config to change the movie locations like in the old app?

Obviously transcoding before download, better ui scaling, etc. are all great features too so they all get my vote.

Matt said they would add that feature earlier in this thread.

Yeh, def. need to be able to change the download location… missed a bit of a trick there esp as the windows app allowed you too…

Translation… oops, we forgot to include the basic functions of the sync function. I hope the future upgrade comes before you kill the windows store app, which at least allows control of location and size of synced media.

I have an identical setup. I conclude it doesn’t matter anyway, as according to the support articles, it will download the full resolution movie. So regardless of the SD card size, it will be filled way too quickly with unplayable movies as it doesn’t transcode.

This is a piece of s**t released way too early. It isn’t near being feature-complete.

You missed this bit quoted in the post above yours:

I downloaded it to give this a go, sync features to me are basically required since I work out at sea with no internet.

This new app that is supposed to replace the Windows Store app seams pretty useless so far. I can not choose where to download the files too (Use a separate drive for sync so it doesn’t use up my ssd drive), or transcode them to a smaller file size to save space. I have a 1tb drive for my media drive and with everything set to 2mbit 720p everything still looks good and it saves a hell of a lot of space, I can fit so much on there.

Also tried the Plex Media Player app and saw tv mode, looked good but also no sync feature. Please add that

No, I didn’t miss it. But I have been around Plex as one of the first group of users. The times Elan said “It will be coming soon” have been plenty, and I guess Elan uses a different time-scale when he says “soon” than I would. And that was for vital functions like parental controls that actually blocked deployment in families as well. So I am extremely sceptical when Plex promises to fix or deliver things soon, as time typically gets measured in months and years, instead of days and weeks.

Now you guys pushed people of a cliff: You removed THE critical element of a feature in a new version of the player, and actively removed the old player. Plex was THE solution for active travellers that would lose their internet connection while travelling, or wouldn’t want to bring down their hosts’ internet connection while streaming. That is the typical use case people used the old sync version for. You guys killed your unique selling point, and you don’t even recognize it.

About halfway down this page: https://support.plex.tv/articles/downloads-on-desktop/

That page shows where it saves not a way to change where it saves. Unless that’s what you wanted to show?

Correct, I was answering a question which has since been hidden by the poster:

Currently, you cannot change the download location.

Ah I see… or don’t see in this case. :slightly_smiling_face:
